  1. Unit 1: Percents PC1: I can calculate the price of an item after a discount has been applied. PC2: I can calculate the price of an item after sales tax has been applied. PC3: I can calculate the final price of an item (using discounts and sales tax) PC4: I can define the terms principal, rate, and interest. PC5: I can calculate saving account totals PC6: I can calculate grand totals when buying things on credit.

  2. Sales tax? Sales tax is a tax on goods & services purchased and is added to the buyer's cost Total price = Original price + Sales tax

  3. Discussion Example #1: • If the sales tax rate is 7.25% in California, then how much would you pay in Los Angeles for a pair of shoes that cost $39.00?

  4. Discussion Example #2: • The price of a new car is $29,990. If the sales tax rate is 6.5%, then how much sales tax is being charged? What is the total cost for the car including tax?

  5. Discussion Example #3: • If the sales tax rate is 7.375% in New York State, then how much sales tax would you pay in Albany for a $34 pair of pants?

  6. Group Examples: Complete the following problems together as a group. Everyone must write the problem down and complete all of the work required. After ample time has been given students will be picked to go to the board to work the problem out and explain. • For each problem, find the total cost. • 4.) At best buy a 42” TV that sells for $1250 with a sales tax is 6.5%. Final cost? • 5.) You go out to eat with 3 friends and your meal was $72.50. There is 6.75% sales tax. Final cost? • 6.) Jason bought a printer for $125. The sale tax was 8%. Final cost? • 7.) A Laptop Bag costs $18 with a sales tax of 9%. Final cost? • 8.) A graphing calculator costs $110 with a sales tax of 6%. Final cost?

  7. Individual Practice: Complete the following problems ON YOUR OWN! You need to write the problem down and complete all of the work required. Find the total cost. 9.) A book costs $49.95 with a 3% sales tax. 10.) An MP3 player costs $99.50 with a 4% sales tax. 11.) A microphone costs $129.99 with a sales tax of 5.5% 12.) A pen costs $1.50 with a 4.5% sales tax. 13.) A hotel room costs $135.95 with a 12% sales tax.
