  1. Introduction to the Community College System Dr. Renee Boswell, Ph.D. Counselor, Mountain House High School Carrie Bennett Counselor, Mountain House High School Counselor, Los Medanos College

  2. Why go to a California Community College? • CA Community College is the largest system of higher education in the nation, with 2.1 million students attending 114 colleges. • Students can complete Lower Division General Education and major prep courses before transferring to 4-year universities, where they complete their Upper Division major requirements • Cost only $46 a unit (CSU: $254/unit, UC: $12,630/year) • Faculty to Student ratios are lower • Distance education opportunities (ie, Online/Hybrid courses)

  3. Why go to a California Community College? • Gives students time to mature and time to explore major/career options • Gives students a fresh start if they didn’t reach their potential in high school • Gives students another shot at getting into their top choice schools if they weren’t admitted right out of high school • High school students can take many CC courses for free, and most units will count toward the Associate and/or Bachelor’s Degree

  4. Fun Facts about the Community College • They educate 70% of our state’s nurses • 29% of UC and 51% of CSU graduates started at the community college • It is the state’s most cost-effective system of education; the revenue needed to support one full-time community college student is approximately $5,000 • California has one of the least expensive CC tuition rates in the U.S. (Pennsylvania is the most expensive) • The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that occupations that require an AA/AS degree will grow by 18% through 2020 - faster than the new job growth for those with a BA/BS degree • With baby boomers retiring as the best educated and most skilled workforce in U.S. history, labor experts are concerned that CA will lack workers with the critical aptitude needed to replace them. • http://www.californiacommunitycolleges.cccco.edu/PolicyInAction/KeyFacts.aspx
