  1. Collaboration is a social and politicalphenomenonlinked to the government in Italyoccupied by the Germanallies. Our country wasconsidered a puppet state, where the leadingclasswassubdued to Germany. The termhadalreadybeen in use in Italy, beforeFascismascended to the power, to define the participation of the Socialists to the government. Itwasusedthenreferring to the collaboration of Italy and the otheroccupiedcountries with the Nazis.

  2. Itconsisted in organising a social control over the population, to create a link between the Germanpower and the subduedpeople. The framework of the Social Republic wascomposed of localmembers, according to a state system with itsownbureaucracy, rules and regulations, in a pyramidalsystem with atitsbasiscivil or militaryelements, from different social classes. Theyhad the duty to spy, inform and assure the control and the repression of anyactionwhichcouldbring to public disorder. Itwasessential to keep the order in a puppet country, onlyapparently free, in which Mussolini, the Leader, had to ask for permissionevenwhen he wanted to meethis lover wholived on the lake Garda.

  3. Itwasdifficult for us to findimportantbiographies of «collaborators» becausenameswerehidden and oftencancelled. Theywereoften common people, friends, neighbours, brothers or sisters, relatives in general. Commander Fornero, for example, was a soldier from Casale to whom Rosetta Santambrogioaddressed to obtainhisbrother’s body back for funerals. He was in the National Social Republic. Anotherexamplecould be the photographer, Torielli, whotold Rosetta he had the photostaken on the scene of Banda Tom’smassacre. How could he ownthosephotos and why?
