  1. Today in Biology Week #1 Quarter 2 (10/16-10/17) Homework: Notebook by Friday 10/18 • Biology Learning Goal: • I can explain difference between osmosis and diffusion • I can explain hypertonic, hypotonic solutions Warm Up Question: 1. In your own words describe the difference between osmosis and diffusion. Fact of the Day An Octopus has three hearts. • To Do Today: • New seating chart • Review Osmosis and Diffusion • Review Hypertonic, Hypotonic and Isotonic solutions • Review of Quarter 1

  2. PASSIVE Facilitated Diffusion Phagocytosis TO EAT Pinocytosis TO DRINK ENDOCYTOSIS EXOCYTOSIS ION PUMPS ACTIVE OSMOSIS DIFFUSION How do cells eat and drink????? • TYPES OF TRANSPORT video review 1 http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=wRZthGlzEUc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdGpsDF2Ci8 Video Review 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOxRXn5r9Jo

  3. DIFFUSION MOVEMENT OF MATERIALS FROM AREA OF HIGHER CONCENTRATION TO AREA OF LESSER CONCENTRATION UNTIL EQUILIBRIUM IS REACHED DOES NOT USE ATP (ADENOSINE TRIPHOSPHATE) Sugar in water animation http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=diffusionin+water+animatpon&qs=n&form=QBVR&pq=diffusionin+water+animatpon&sc=0-0&sp=-1&sk=#view=detail&mid=478169FFACE07D380E9A478169FFACE07D380E9A

  4. OSMOSIS Osmosis is a special example of diffusion. It is the diffusion of a substance through a semi permeable membrane from a more dilute solution to a more concentrated solution. DOES NOT USE ATP (ADENOSINE TRIPHOSPHATE)

  5. Facilitated Diffusion a type of passive transport that allows substances to cross membranes with the assistance of special transport proteins. Some molecules and ions such as glucose, sodium ions and chloride ions are unable to pass through the lipid bilayer of cell membranes.

  6. ACTIVE TRANSPORT MOVEMENT OF MATERIALS FROM AREA OF LOWER CONCENTRATION TO AREA OF HIGHER CONCENTRATION REQUIRES ATP

  7. ENDOCYTOSIS AND EXOCYTOSIS Vesicle

  8. TYPES OF SOLUTIONS Cells can be in 3 different types of solutions • Hypotonic: Low solute on the outside of cell causing the water to rush into the cells to reach an equilibrium….cell could lyse (explode) • Hypertonic: High solute on the outside causing water to leave cell and cell dehydrates • Isotonic: Cell and solute are at an equilibrium.

  9. label each of the cells to the right As – Hypotonic, Hypertonic, Isotonic Egg in different solutions http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSS3EtKAzYc Review Activity

  10. Today in Biology Week #1 Quarter 2 (10/18) Homework: Notebook cover for Monday. Monday organize notebook • Biology Learning Goal: • I can explain difference between osmosis and diffusion • I can explain hypertonic, hypotonic solutions Warm Up Question: 1.Describe each solution to right *Transport http://www.brainpop.com/science/cellularlifeandgenetics/activetransport/ Fact of the Day Alligators give birth to females in cold temperatures and to males when it's hot • To Do Today: • Complete review • From block and • Turn in • 2. Completevocabulary terms • Chapter 6
