3. Solid Waste Assistance Grants Program • Grant funds are derived from a portion of the $1.00/ton fee on solid wastes landfilled in the state. • State law divides the grant moneys into two subfunds: • Noncompetitive grant moneys that are allocated to county governments each year on state road formula • Competitive Grants that are available to counties, cities, waste authorities and multi-county entities

4. Solid Waste Assistance Grants • Clean up of existing and future illegal dumps on public and private properties; • Establishment of a collection program for white goods, recyclables, or other bulky materials; • Public education efforts related to proper management of solid wastes and recycling;

5. Solid Waste Assistance Grants (cont.) • Payment of up to 50% of a local solid waste enforcement officer’s salary; • Payment of up to 75% of the cost of conducting an HHW collection day; • Development of other solid waste management program activities associated with the prevention, enforcement, or abatement of unauthorized dumps.

9. Waste Tire Assistance Grants • Waste Tire assistance grant funds are derived from portions of a $1.00 per tire fee and are currently allocated in the following manner: • 60% is set aside for grants to local county governments; • 15% is set aside for persons who will manufacture products from waste tires or that will conduct demonstration projects that will lead to the development of new products.

10. Local Government Waste Tire Grants • To set up and support local waste tire collection programs for small quantity generators; • For clean up of illegal waste tire dumps or scattered tires on the roadways; • For up to 50% of the salary of a solid waste enforcement officer; • For the purchase of waste tire products derived or manufactured from Mississippi tires.

Waste Tire Incentive Recycling And Demonstration Project Grants • Available to companies or persons or other entities who will manufacture products from waste tires. • Available to persons, companies, local governments or universities that will conduct demonstration projects with waste tires that will result in new products being developed from waste tires.

Waste Tire Abatement Program Funds are used to: • Clean up illegal tire dumps at sites or properties where the owner was dumped upon, • Clean up tires dumped prior to waste tire regulations and laws, or • Clean up tires when the owner or responsible party will not initiate cleanup as ordered by the MDEQ.

Right Way To Throw Away Grants • Grants awarded to county, municipality or multi-county agency • Funding for one day collection events for the collection of household hazardous wastes such as paints, solvents, used motor oil, automotive batteries, nickel cadmium batteries, fluorescent light bulbs and household chemicals.
