  4. Residential Programs The University System of Georgia also offers residential programs for gifted talented, and motivated students at: • 1) The Advanced Academy of Georgia is located on the campus of the University of West Georgia • 2) The Georgia Academy of Aviation, Mathematics, Engineering, and Science is located at Middle Georgia College (also known as GAMES) • If you’re interested in a residential program, please schedule an appointment to meet with Ms. Bruce regarding admissions requirements.

  5. Eligibility requirements Students must meet eligibility requirements as determined by each program’s regulations and meet college admissions requirements for participation.

  6. Admissions Requirements The Admissions Requirements Listed Above Are For the 2011-12 School Year. Each Post-secondary Institution Sets Their Own Admissions Requirements.

  8. Additional Considerations

  9. Things to Consider • In order to participate in any of the programs offered off campus, you will need to have your own transportation. Courses are offered at UGA, ATC (Elbert and Athens), Emmanuel, and Gainesville’s Oconee campus. • If you take a course that is required for graduation, you must earn a passing grade in the course or you will not graduate—this sounds obvious, but is important to consider. • If you enroll in Dual Enrollment classes and are not successful in them in the fall, you will not be allowed to continue in these programs and will be scheduled in credit recovery courses or online courses for the spring semester. You will not be placed in the regular classroom because our classes are yearlong.

  10. Things to Consider • When you take courses through ACCEL or Dual Enrollment—HOPE Grant , your high school schedule will reflect these courses but you are will attend classes based on the college schedule. For example, we may list your dual enrollment class during 7th period on your schedule, but your college class may meet at very different times (e.g. 2 days a week in the evening). • If you are taking part-time ACCEL or Hope Grant classes off the MCHS campus, you will likely have to take courses outside of the regular school day—this means you will probably only be able to participate in these programs if you are willing to take courses that are scheduled after 3:00pm (we have to make sure your college classes don’t conflict with your high school classes.

  11. Things to Consider • Even if you meet the requirements to participate, there is no guarantee that the courses will work in your schedule. There are many factors at play when we try to mesh high school graduation requirements and schedules with college schedules. We’ll do our best to accommodate you but just know there are no guarantees. Schedules are finalized in August when we return to school. • There may be additional out-of-pocket expenses above and beyond what the ACCEL award, HOPE Grant, and FTE will fund--it is important to consult your parents regarding your family’s ability to cover these should they arise. • AP Versus ACCEL classes—this is the big question every year. You must decide what is most important for you based on where you want to go to college, how rigorous their admissions policies are, how many AP courses you’ve already taken, and what you want out of college classes.

  12. Things to Consider • Current 10th Grade students who are interested in MOWR—there does not appear to be a feasible local college option that meets the requirements for American Literature. This means that at this time, MOWR is not a realistic option for 11th grade students but is still something that we can look at for senior year. • If you have heavy extracurricular commitments after school, dual enrollment may not be the right option for you unless you’re considering the English 1101/1102 or College Algebra/Precalculus class offered at MCHS. • EOCTs and Graduation Tests—if you enroll in a course that requires an EOCT, you are still required to take the EOCT. If you’re missing part of a test to graduate, you will still have to report to the high school on scheduled testing dates.

  13. Next Steps: Take Required Tests • Students interested in the ACCEL Program or MOWR must take the SAT or ACT and meet specific institutional requirements to qualify—see next slide for SAT/ACT test dates/registration information. • Students interested in Dual Enrollment-HOPE Grant will be required to complete ASSET or Compass testing to determine eligibility—the ASSET will be offered at MCHS later in the school year. • If you are applying to ATC and have not already taken the SAT or ACT, you may take the Compass or ASSET instead. You might want to consider taking both to see if increase your chances of meeting eligibility requirements.

  14. Next Steps: • All application materials must be submitted to Ms. Bruce in the Guidance Office. If you have any questions about the options or material presented in this presentation, please see Ms. Bruce.
