Introduction Heritage • Reflects unique cultural, built, tangible, intangible, natural and living aspects of human creative value. • Holds utmost significance to the country, region, place/community and belongs to everyone. • Almost all Indian cities and towns reflect a lifestyle that is traditionally arrived at and can be called “Living Heritage”.

Introduction • We have a lot to learn from the experiences and events of people who have gone before us. • A wide range of techniques are required to save the fragile reminders and markers of the past -- preserved for future generations to learn from and enjoy. • Important - Development of urban and rural areas can be achieved through a well-planned conservation strategy for the heritage that they display.

Heritage Conservation & Management It is realized that Heritage, though forms an integral part of our cultural identity and existence, has not been recognized as a mainstream element in development planning. • Role of Heritage conservation & management is important to preserve and restore, as appropriate, cultural property for present and future generations.

  5. Heritage Conservation & Management • Workshop intends to : • Fill-in the gaps in overall understanding of heritage • Capacitate a good understanding among the government officials of the heritage values of a particular area- which will eventually help in formulating appropriate governmental interventions towards Heritage-Sensitive Sustainable Development Planning.

  6. Aim of workshop “To Sensitize Officials of Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), including urban administrators, planners, engineers and architects, about the fact that heritage can and should be an important and integral component while planning for urban development”. Workshop focuses on: • Facilitating Institutional arrangements and developing Institutional capacity. • Emphasizes on building capacity of individuals and human resource which can bring about tremendous changes in the heritage sector in general.

  7. Objectives of Workshop • To create and stimulate awareness among the professionals for preservation & conservation of the heritage and respect the knowledge and skills of the past. • To enable participants on importance of conservation & documentation of protected and unprotected monuments of History.

  8. Objectives of Workshop • Tosensitize participants on importance of cultural heritage and its importance in physical planning/city planning- various Acts and Rules governing the restoration of heritage buildings. • Sensitize participants “to act as a responsible pressure group to arouse public opinion in case of threat to physical or natural heritage by way of public policies/private interferences”.
