  3. Description of Clothing: Women Early 90’s consisted of women wearing bright neon colors which was a continuation from the 80’s. Leggings and exercise wear was very popular. This shifted into the hippie look in the mid 90’s. The hippie look was inspired by 1960’s fashion. This look included floral dresses and Gypsy tops. Towards the late 90’s pastel colors became very popular. This included color like baby blue and pink tank tops which exposed more skin than previous styles.

  4. Description of Clothing: Men The early 90’s for men began with the grunge look. This style included flannels with denim jackets. Once the grunge look faded the preppy look began to make its presence. This look was especially popular among the wealthy. Young men wore khaki pants along with boat shoes and navy blue blazers. This later shifted to the Hip-hop look which finished off the millennium. Oversized jackets along with tracksuits were popular among young men as casual wear.

  5. Colors and designs • Fabrics and Prints • Linen, silk, cashmere, devore velvets, Lycra, fleece and were the main fabrics of the 90s. Plain fabrics or subtle weaves and the novelty of computer generated abstract prints replaced floral prints throughout the nineties. Dressing down' became the key fashion trend of the 1990s. The cluttered, over-the-top glamour of the 1980s was rejected in favour of simple, understated clothes. Neutral colours like grey, brown, olive green and beige replaced the royal blue, bright fuchsia and emerald green of the previous decade. Countering the wide shoulders and frills of the 1980s, clothes in the 1990s were neat, slim fitting and casual and fabrics were softer and more relaxed. Make-up was generally toned-down and natural and many women's magazines stressed the 'less is more' philosophy. Jewellery, too, became more minimal, in contrast to the chunky, flashy accessories of the 1980s.

  6. A short-lived textile fad in the 90’s was a heat-sensitive fabric known as Hypercolour. Hypercolour t-shirts and shorts contained a heat-sensitive pigment that changed colour, depending on a person's body temperature. < lol.

  7. How did clothing communicate social status, occupation, or role? • Office wear goes casual • Power suits fell out of fashion in the 1990s. Working from home became more popular and office attire evolved to become more casual, comfortable and low-key. • Many women opted for the 'mix-and-match' look, combining a tailored skirt with a stretch-fabric top and a smart jacket. Mens' office wear wasalso relaxed; swapping formal suits and ties for casual, light-weight shirts and trousers. The recession toward the beginning of the decade and new business beliefs proved the importance of employees feeling more comfortable at work, Casual attire was the name of the decade. Dressing down in every aspect of life became normal. for the first time, you couldn’t tell who was rich and who was part of the middle class.

  8. The Rich: Branding Designer clothing - It was also fashionable to dress entirely in black or wear designer clothing displaying Italian or French labels (such as Lacoste, Yves Saint-Laurent, Armani, Gucci, or Chanel) as a way of demonstrating one's apparent social status and wealth.

  9. Who were the fashion icons & designers of the time? • Drew BarrymoreThe 90's were the best decade for Drew Barrymore. She was on the cover of every single magazine, she used to hang out with Courtney Love and she even was the image of a MiuMiu campaign. Elaine Benes • Seinfeld's best friend, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, knew how to wear a grandma dress with white socks and still look cool. • Kelly KapowskiPopular, beafutiful, head cheerleader and captain of the volleyball, swin and softball teams. Kelly Kapowski, played by Tiffani Thiessen in Saved By The Bell, was the perfect 90's girl.Cindy CrawfordThe 90's were the decade of the super models. Claudia, Naomi, Linda, but our favourite is definitely Cindy. • Jay-ZEmerging the late 90’s a key fashion icon was Jay-Z. Since hip hop and rap was booming at the time, people sought after Jay-Z for fashion inspiration and guide. Jay-Z even launched his own line called ‘Rocawear’.

  10. DESIGNERS Just to name a few… • Calvin Klein Chanel Gianni Versace Donatella Versace Donna Karan Tom Ford Jean Paul Gaultier • In America three of the most influential fashion designers of the time were Michael Kors, Tommy Hilfiger, and Calvin Klein. - Michael Korsset up his own business and his knowledge and consciousness of trends enabled him to produce simple well-cut garments, whose sophistication and elegance appealed to a whole new breed of wealthy American customers drawn to the new vogue for minimalist chic. - Tommy Hilfiger's blue jeans and other products made him the king of "urban fashion" during the 1990s. He first started out in men’s clothing then branched out into women’s clothing, jewelry and even fragrances. His simple designs, emphasizing his name as the brand, were not considered high fashion, but Hilfiger's marketing savvy put him at the top of the industry, making him notably popular. - One of the first fashion designers to anticipate the globalization of world markets was Calvin Klein. A brilliant artistic director, Klein used carefully constructed advertisements containing images tinted with eroticism to promote his sophisticatedly functional mass-produced designs, which won massive popularity among the urban youth of the 1990s.

  11. How did music and pop culture influence fashion? • In the early 1990s, pop rappers such as The Fresh Prince, and kid ‘n playpopularized baseball caps and bright, often neon-colored, clothing. Kris Kross also established the fad of wearing clothes backwards. • Gangsta rap pioneers N.W.A. popularized an early form of gangsta style in the late 1980s, consisting of Dickies pants, plaid shirts and jackets, Chuck Taylors/Converse sneakers, and black Raiders baseball caps and Raiders Starter jackets. Starter jackets, in addition, were also a popular trend in their own right during the late 1980s and early 90s. They became something of a status-symbol, with incidents of robberies of the jackets reported in the media. • Music in shopping malls, as well as other stores and boutiques, makes for a pleasant shopping experience, but also seems to be no accident. When we’re shopping and hear a song by a certain musician, it takes us back to their video or when we saw them on TV, We remember what they sang but we also remember what they wore, gravitates us toward that style of fashion. TV shows like Boy meets world demonstrated middle class teens, While the fresh prince demonstrated upperclass business apparel and Hip hop culture of the 90’s

  12. historical and cultural evens that influenced fashion in the 90’s • A significant cultural event that influenced fashion at the time was the emergence and introduction of hip-hop and rap. This movement not only greatly influenced the music industry, but the fashion industry as well. Moreover, because of rap and hip-hop the ‘Super Baggy Pants’ came about. As with a lot of the styles of the 90's, baggy jeans originated from hip-hop artists, many of whom came from poor, inner-city families where clothes were passed down from larger siblings to smaller ones. It's ironic that hip-hop stars would still choose to wear ill-fitting clothes even after making millions of dollars and it's even more ironic that middle-class youths would adopt the unflattering style. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kr0tTbTbmVAhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=010KyIQjkTk
