  2. Read care labels. Make sure dry clean only items go to the dry cleaner. • For machine wash clothes • Sort your laundry • Color – group similar colors together. • Never wash red with white, especially red’s first wash • Fabric type: light weight - heavy • ex: don’t wash you best white dress blouse with dark jeans • Texture: lint producers vs. lint collectors • ex: don’t wash you best dress or suit shirt with towels or sweatpants/sweatshirts • Amount of dirt • Don’t wash clothes from your mud run with your best dress clothes • Temperature of water • Most clothes will wash well in cool/warm water. Most stains should be washed in cold water.

  3. Before you wash • Pre treat all stains • Use your favorite stain remover and follow the package directions. Some stain removers work best when allowed to soak in several minutes before washing. • Rub it in • You can usually wash pre treated items with other items • Empty pockets • Shake out loose dirt and lint (outside)

  4. The washing machine • Read and understand machine directions • Select water temperature and load size • As the water fills the machine, Add detergent and bleach (if using bleach this load) • Next, load clothes into the machine. • Do not stuff the machine. Clothes need to be able to move around to get clean • When the machine finishes adding water, it will start. • (Many new washing machines are now on the market that are different than this. Again, read and understand machine directions)

  5. After washing • As you unload the machine, examine clothes that were stained. Was the stain removed? If not, treat and wash again. DO NOT put this item in the dryer. Heat sets in stains. Dryers get hot. Ergo, no stains in hot water or the dryer. • Most clothes can hang to dry. This is better for most clothes, especially clothes with elastic. Heat is very damaging to elastic – hang these items to dry. • Some clothes must lay flat to dry – you will see this on the care tags • Some clothes look better if they are placed in the dryer.

  6. The dryer • Many dryers have heat settings. Typically a lower setting is less damaging to clothes as long as you don’t have to have it in there for two hours to get dry! • Most clothes should be dry in 30-40 minutes. • Remove clothes immediately from dryer and hang them up or fold them. This prevents wrinkles. • If clothes are still damp, dry them a little longer. If you fold damp clothes and put them in a drawer they will become musty and stink. Dry them first!

  7. ironing • Be careful with settings. An iron that is too hot for the fabric will burn it. Best case scenario is that your clothes are ruined. Worse case scenario is that you will start a fire and burn your house down. Be careful. • With a proper iron setting, use an iron and ironing board and practice. Do not iron in wrinkles. If you do, use a little damp spray and try again. • You can not iron on a laminate counter top. You will ruin your countertop. Use an ironing board. • See lesson in class and practice, practice, practice.

  8. Last but not least • Take care of your clothes – they will last longer • Fold neatly • Hang neatly • Don’t look like a ragamuffin – especially for a job interview. Make sure your clothes are properly hemmed and neatly pressed. Do not wear your suit coat in the car. Hang it in the back and put it on upon arrival so it looks fresh and not like you wore it to bed last night. • Stay classy!
