  3. Philosophy Slams? • Does anybody want to drop some knowledge?

  4. Enlightenment Philosopher Campaign Poster! • Attention all world historians! There is going to be an election at MCP to select the most historically influential Enlightenment Philosopher. • You have been assigned to be the campaign manager for the Enlightenment Philosopher of your choice. • As the campaign manager, it is your job to create a poster that highlights why your Enlightenment Philosopher should be chosen as the most influential. Get ready to hit the campaign trail!

Travel Blog: Modern Day Philosopher due Thursday! • What is an example of a modern day philosopher that has or will “enlighten” the world? • Choose an individual that you believe is a modern day philosopher. • Create a travel blog entry from the city where that person lives which explains what that person’s philosophy is and how it has or will influence the modern world. • As always, make sure to drop some knowledge!

Remember, the Enlightenment?! • What? • Philosophical movement of intellectuals (people that dropped knowledge) who applied reason (a statement of fact to explain the way something is) to understand the world. • When? • Mostly in the 18th century (1700’s) • Who? • Enlightenment philosophers! • Philosopher: a person who studies ideas about knowledge, truth, the nature and meaning of life, etc. • Where? • Western Europe (including Italy, Germany, England, France) • Why? • Philosophers hoped that by using reason, they could make progress towards a better society.

The Role of Philosophy • To the philosophers, the role of philosophy was to change the world. • A philosopher is one who applies him or herself to the study of society with the purpose of making mankind better and happier. • The philosophers applied reason by using the scientific method to reach an understanding of all life. • The ideas of the Enlightenment would become a force for reform, and eventually, revolution.

Enlightenment Philosopher Primary Source Documents • Identify at least four words that are unfamiliar to you and define them. • Summarize the main idea of the primary source document in a 4-5 sentence brief paragraph. In other words, what is this philosopher saying?! • Articulate the historical significance of this document in a 4-5 sentence brief paragraph. In other words, why does this matter to us?! • Use all four words in your short paragraphs!

Jigsaw and Stations • Your teams will nominate a “secretary of _________” to be responsible for teaching the other students in the class about the Enlightenment’s impact on their aspect of society. • You will move to the different stations throughout the classroom to learn about the Enlightenment’s impact on the different aspects of society from the “secretary of ___________” at each station.

  11. Exit Ticket • Write a paragraph arguing which aspect of society the Enlightenment impacted the most and describe how there is still evidence of its impact in the world today!

The American Revolution • What? • In response to unfair taxation and other issues, the American colonists revolted against the British rule, formed their own army, and declared their independence. • When? • 1764-1783 (end of the 18th century) • Who? • American Colonists • Remember, there were Loyalists (also called Tories or Royalists) too! • Where? • 13 American colonies (the Northeast of the modern day United States) • Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Virginia. • Why? • Many Europeans saw the American Revolution as the embodiment of the Enlightenment’s political dreams. This also led to the creation of the United States as an independent nation and the establishment of a representative democracy.

  17. Gallery Walk! • You will be walking throughout the room to read and analyze various historical documents from the American Revolutionary War. • You will write down your analysis of the historical documents in your notebook (in preparation for possibly leading the whole class discussion).

The French Revolution • What? • During the French Revolution, French citizens razed and redesigned their country’s political landscape, uprooting centuries-old institutions such as absolute monarchy and the feudal system. Like the American Revolution before it, the French Revolution was influenced by Enlightenment ideals, particularly the concepts of popular sovereignty and inalienable rights. • When? • 1789-1799 • Who? • Bourgeoisie (who led the peasants) called for reform. Also referred to as the third estate. • Aristocracy wanted to keep the monarchy and feudal system (first and second estates). • Where? • France, which is in Western Europe. • Why? • The French Revolution was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France from 1789 to 1799 that had a fundamental impact on French history and on modern history worldwide

  25. Spontaneous Debate! • Half of the class will be assigned to debate that the French Revolution was more revolutionary than the American Revolution. • The other half of class with debate that the American Revolution was more revolutionary than the French Revolution.
