  3. # 2 Study your Students It’s not enough to know the Material • You need to know: • Their Talents • Prior Experiences • What they already Know • What they need to learn

  4. # 3 Students will take Risks in a Safe Environment • Learning requires students to acknowledge what they don’t know. • Take risks to learn and rethink what they do know. • A little warmth goes a long way.

  5. # 4 Great Instructors exude PASSION as well as purpose • The difference between good and great is not knowledge it’s PASSION • Desire is infectious- if the instructor has it the students will likely catch it.

  6. # 5 Students learn when instructors show them how much they need to learn. • Students will learn when they understand why they need to know the material.

  7. # 6 Keep it clear even if you can’t keep it simple. • Break down the complex ideas and make them understandable.

  8. # 7 Practice vulnerability without sacrificing credibility • You DON”T have to know ALL the answers. • You do have to know all the basic or key answers.

  9. # 8 Teach from the Heart • The best teaching is personal and different people will teach in different ways.

  13. # 12 Great Instructors ask Questions • Learning is about exploring and exploring begins with Questions. • Questions that open the door and require thinking. • Know how and who to ask questions of.

  14. # 13 You’re not passing out information- you’re teaching people how to think. • Don’t tell people what to do or give them the answers, make them think to get their own answers. • Give them a place to start, the skills to gather information and think, and arrive at an answer.

  15. # 14 Stop Talking Start Listening • What you do is nearly as important as what you say. • To show students you care LISTEN to THEM • Be comfortable with silence that’s when thinking occurs.

  16. # 15 Learn what to Listen for • Listen to a student’s language and the way they organize their thoughts. • Listen for • Emotion behind the words • Feelings they are experiencing • Their frustrations and successes

  17. # 16 Let your students teach each other • Students do learn on their own and from their peers. • Consider creating “expert” groups and have them share their knowledge with others.

  18. # 17 Avoid using the same Approach with Everyone • All students can learn they just learn differently. • Use a multidimensional approach

  19. # 18 Never stop Teaching • Effective teaching is about the relationship between teacher and student. • It doesn’t end when the class ends.

Remember • “I’d rather see a sermon than hear one.” • Have a back up plan- In fact have more than one. • Install high standards and the desire to improve, but avoid perfectionism that can never be attained. • What it takes to be a good instructor is creativity and the ability to express yourself and your emotions.
