  2. Early Life • Born: September 25, 1897 • Birthplace: New Albany, Mississippi • Name at birth: William Cuthbert Falkner (until 1924)

  3. Family • Mother: Maud (Butler) Faulkner • Father: Murray Charles Faulkner • Grandfather: Colonel William Clark Falkner • He had 3 younger brothers him being the oldest of the 4. • His daughter Jill was born in 1933

  4. Education • Dropped out of school right before graduating. • Devoted himself to undirected reading • Studied for a while at the university of Mississippi.

  5. Adult Life • Joined the British Royal Air Force (RAF) as a cadet pilot under training in Canada. • Enrolled for a few university courses, published poems and drawings in campus newspapers • In 1920 he joined the universities drama club • Worked in a New York bookstore for three months in the fall of 1921 • returned to Oxford and ran the university post office there with notorious laxness until forced to resign.

Adult Life He becomes scout master of a boy scout troop. • 1924 he was removed from boy scout group for drinking. • 1924 resigned from post office because of charges brought by postal inspector. • 1927-1929 two poems were published. • 1931- two more poems were published. • 1932 published another poem

  7. Cont. Adult life • Leaves for 5 week assignment at 20th Century fox where he meets Meta Dougherty Carpenter and begins intimate relationship that last 15 years. • 1936 published another poem

  8. Tragedies • Grandfather dies-1922 • His daughter Alabama was born in 1931… • Nine days later she died His father died in 1932 His brother Dean killed in plane crash in 1935 Mammy Caroline Barr dies and Faulkner delivers eulogy in 1940
