  1. ANTIBIOTICS & ANTISEPTICS Lab 11

  2. ANTIMICROBIALS • An antimicrobial is a substance that kills or inhibits the growth of microorganisms • ACTION OF ANTIMICROBIAL DRUGS • Bacteriocidal (destroy microbes) • Bacteriostatic (Inhibit growth) • LABORATORY TESTS IN CHEMOTHERAPY • Susceptibility Testing • Disk Diffusion Methods • Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (E test estimates) • Broth Dilution Methods • MIC, & Minimal Bacteriocidal Concentration (MBC)

  3. Antibiotics • An antibiotic is a substance produced by a microorganism that is antagonistic to the growth of other microorganisms • SPECTRUM OF ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY • Broad spectrum antibiotics • Narrow spectrum antibiotics Testing the susceptibility of Staphylococcus aureus to antibiotics by the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method. Antibiotics diffuse out from antibiotic-containing disks and inhibit growth of S. aureus resulting in a zone of inhibition

  4. DISK DIFFUSIONMETHODS BHA Medium

  5. DISK DIFFUSION METHODS

  6. CHEMICAL METHODS OF CONTROL • DISINFECTANTS • Bacteriocidal (destroy microbes) • Bacteriostatic (Inhibit growth) • ANTISEPTICS • Ideal Disinfectant/Antiseptic • Concentration of the active agent • Environmental factors • Temperature, nature of suspending medium, presence of organic matter • The particular microbe • The number of microbes • Exposure time

  7. EVALUATING DISINFECTANTS • DISK DIFFUSION METHODS STREAK PLATE TO OBTAIN A CONFLUENT BACTERIAL LAWN

  8. EVALUATING DISINFECTANTS • DISK-DIFFUSION METHODS

  9. EVALUATING DISC DIFFUSION METHODS FOR VARIOUS DISINFECTANTS USING STANDARD BACTERIA
