Why Montserrat celebrate St Patrick's day • Background Information • Montserrat was populated by Arawak and Carib people when it was claimed by Christopher Columbus. • *The island fell under English control in 1632 when a group of Irish suffering anti-Catholic violence in Nevis, many of whom had been forcibly removed from Ireland as indentured servants, settled there. • *The import of African slaves, common to most Caribbean islands, began early. • *An economy based on sugar, rum, arrowroot and Sea Islandcotton was established. By the late 1700s there were many plantations on the island. • *In 1782, during the American Revolutionary War, Montserrat was briefly captured by France. It was returned to the United Kingdom under the Treaty of Paris which ended that conflict.

The Irish presence in Montserrat dates back to the 1630s, when the first pioneers -- Roman Catholics -- sailed over from St. Kitts because of friction with British Protestant settlers there. •  *The Irish planters brought African slaves to work their sugar cane fields. Soon the slaves outnumbered them 3-to-1 and began rebelling. • *In 1768, the slaves planned an island-wide attack on St. Patrick's Day, when the planters would be celebrating. • *Servants were instructed to grab all the weapons they could find inside the Government House while field slaves stormed the building with rocks, farm tools, clubs and homemade swords. But someone leaked the plan, and debate over who's to blame still continues. Local authorities punished the slaves severely, hanging nine. Why Montserrat celebrates St Patricks day Is celebrated to remember those slaves who tried to escape on this day the on 17 March 1798 and failed. This led to Montserrat becoming one of only two places in the world that celebrates St Patrick's Day as a public holiday, the other being Ireland. Slavery was abolished in Montserrat in 1834. In the decades after Britain abolished slavery in 1834, most whites left the island. *But their surnames were adopted by the slaves and live on

Sharing Work Invitation inviting parents to watch Irish dancing St. Patrick's Dayis an Irish holiday celebrated all around the globe to honour the patron saint of Ireland. • But did you know that Montserrat, an island in the Caribbean also celebrates this day.  • To all parents/Carers in key stage 2, you are invited to come along and watch the children in year 4 and 5 perform the Irish Jig on Wednesday 17th March. • Performance will be held in the dining hall at St Patrick's day 17th March 2010
