  2. What is an open-ended response? • A short response to a reading passage • The first bullet is usually “close to the text” to apply what you know • The second bullet is usually “beyond the text” to extend what you know • Textual examples are essential • Write one paragraph per bullet point

  3. R.S.S.E. R = RESTATE the question = SUPPORT using the TEXT (steal from the text, but be sure to put it in quotes) • In the text, the author states, “…” = SUPPORT in YOUR WORDS • This means… = EXTEND/CONNECT (to another book/movie, the world, or your life) • This reminds me of… S S E

  4. REMEMBER… • Each question or bullet gets R.S.S • If there is more than 1 question, you only have to Extend (E) to one question!
