Here are the names of the Math Units we teach and their order throughout the year… Place value and multi digit addition and subtraction Lines, line segments, and quadrilaterals Addition and subtraction word problems Using addition and subtraction in word problems Multiplication and division with 0-5, 9 & 10 Multiplication and division with 6, 7, & 8 and problem solving Exploring fractions, probability, and division with remainders Measurement Figures, angles and triangles

5. The Big Idea in 3rd Grade Math Number sense: Students use their growing knowledge of the number system through the exploration of numerals to develop meaning for adding, subtracting, multiplication, division and solving problems.

6. Basic Facts By the end of third grade, the expectation is that the students have “memorized” their math facts * * * * addition/subtraction facts up to 20. multiplication facts: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10 , 20, 25

7. Expectations: When solving mathematical problems we encourage students to be flexible, efficient, and accurate in their work.

8. Different ways we see our students work… 57 + 24 = ____ 50 + 20 = 70 7 + 4 = 11 70 + 10 + 1 = 81 “I know that 57 is really 50 plus 7 and 24 is 20 plus 4. So 50 + 20 is 70 and 7 + 4 is 11. 11 is also a 10 plus a 1. So, if I add them all together 70 + 10 + 1 = 81.”

11. LiteracyReading, Writing, Oral Communication We will be covering the following Literacy units this year: • Personal Narrative • Nonfiction – Expository Writing • Fiction – Young Author’s Conference • Poetry Throughout – Celebration in December

Components of Literacy in the Bellevue School District • 90 minutes a day is devoted to teaching reading and writing each day in class. • Independent Reading: 20-30 min. • Guided Reading (small group instruction) • Shared Reading: daily whole class reading lesson • Word Work and Making Words • Independent Writing (using writing journals) • Guided Writing (individual conferencing) • Shared Writing: daily whole group writing lesson • Writing Process: drafting, editing/revising, peer editing and publishing

13. Word Work In our study of words we will be teaching a range of decoding and spelling skills that are vital to third grade learning. The Word Wall and Making Words are some of the activities that your child will be participating in to better comprehend and understand words across the curriculum.

14. Science We will be studying the following topics in Science this year: Human Body Earth Materials Measurement

15. Social Studies • Geography and Map Skills • Immigrations and Cultural Diversity • Economy – Supply and Demand • Civics- Public Services

16. Homework • Reading Logs – these go home on Monday and are due the following Monday. The reading expectation is 20 minutes per night. • Responsibility Chart – Responsibility charts go home every Friday to be read by an adult at home. The student’s homework is to get a signature or a note back when the charts are returned on Monday. The graded work attached to the charts is to stay at home. • Homework – A weekly homework sheet will be sent home on Monday night. Some of the work is not turned into school, but involves parent involvement. Please help your child when needed. Your signature is prove to me that your child has completed the assigned tasks.

17. You can help at home by… • Reading EVERY day for 20 minutes • Ask questions about their reading (What is the character thinking? Why did that happen? If you were in this position, what would you do? What do you think will happen next, how will this story end?) Have them give evidence!!! • Work on Math Facts and discuss money and time concepts • Talk with your child about the writing you see in their returned work each week and encourage your child to write for fun. • Access TumbleBooks online at: http://www.tumblebooks.com/library/ username: eastgate password: books

18. Important Information  • Birthdays – Because there are twenty-seven students in our class this year, please refrain from sending in cupcakes or treats for birthdays. We’ll celebrate by singing the “Happy Birthday” song and, but we’ll leave the sugar load at home this year. Thanks! • Field Trips –We will most likely be going on one field trip this year, and hopefully be bringing two field trips to our school. When the details are more complete, I will pass on that information. Of course, there will be opportunities for chaperones.
