Basic Information What are condoms? Condoms are sheathes that trap the sperm when a man climaxes (“comes”). When used properly, condoms greatly protects against pregnancy, and sexually transmitted diseases including HIV.
History of Condoms A wall painting on one of the caves discovered in France provides evidence of condom use for more than 15,000 years (Parisot, 1987). Condoms are reported to have been used as a protection against STI since the 16th century and against unwanted pregnancy since the 18th century (Himes, 1963).
Types of Condoms Male Female Condoms
The Male Condom • The male condom is also known as a sheath, a prophylactic, a rubber, “johnny”, sox, ….and the like! • A male condom is usually abut 7in (18 to 19cm) long and most are made of thin latex (i.e. form of rubber). • A polyurethane type of condom is also available for those who are allergic to latex
Male Condom Effectiveness • Condom’s effectiveness largely depends on the person who uses it. • When used correctly, a condom is about 98% effectivein preventing pregnancy and HIV infection.
The Female Condom • The female condom was invented about 10 years ago. • Female condoms are made of a polyurethane plastic that is sturdier than the male latex condoms, thus offering less frequent breakage, improved comfort and longer shelf life. • Unlike latex male condoms female condoms are not affected by oil-based lubricants.
The Female Condom • A woman needs to insert the female condom into her vagina before having sex. • There are several “insert positions”. The condom may be inserted while lying down, or by standing with one leg on a chair or by squatting.
Female Condom Effectiveness • Like the male condom, female condoms are highly effective when used correctively. • Effectiveness is also enhanced if the man is madeaware of it to ensure that he does not put his penis outside it.
Advantages of Female Condoms • The female condom does not constrict the penis like the latex condoms. • The polyurethane material in the female condoms allows the transfer of body heat thus improving sensation and enhancing sexual enjoyment. • Provides protection to women at risk for STI and HIV infection especially where • sexual partners are uncooperative.
Advantages of Female Condoms • The female condom can be inserted well before sexual intercourse. • Being sturdier than male condoms, the female condom is less subject to tearing. • No special storage arrangements are needed because polyurethane is not affected by changes in temperature and humidity. • Expiry date is 60 moths (5 years) from the date of manufacture.
Disadvantages of Female Condoms • The female condom is relatively expensive because the polyurethane materials are more expensive than latex material used for the male condom. • Female condoms uses larger amount of materials too. • Younger girls may find it difficult to use during their first sexual experience.
Myths & Misconceptions • Condoms are contaminated with HIV. • Condoms have holes. • Condoms are too small for some men.
