  1. Warm-up: What’s wrong with this picture? Think about lab safety and decide what each of these students is doing wrong. If you have an answer, come up to the board and write a brief description next to one of the scenarios. (One person at a time!)

  2. WHATS SA MATTA Laboratory answer key • Safety rule poster covered • No safety glasses in cabinet • No fire extinguisher in frame across room where it is hard to find in an emergency • MSDS have a lock on it so no one can access them in an emergency • Door window cracked • Exit sign obstructed • Door obstructed with boxes • Fire alarm has something hanging on it • Safety shower obstructed with boxes • Box under safety shower upside down • Someone climbing cabinet to get jar • Someone smoking on barrels • Too many plugs in an outlet • Headphones/music in the lab • Daisy chained cords • Electric cords a trip hazard • Food/coffee on lab table • Student drinking from flask • Student drinking from cup (with straw) on lab table • Students drinking while doing laser lab • Student leaning against “Danger” laser table • Student not watching - laser experiment unattended • Student not watching – gas unattended • Student pouring chemicals down drain • Student spilling chemicals • Students using chemicals without gloves • Student spraying aerosol in class • Trash in lab drawers • Radioactive box leaking • Student walking over laser • Student exploding something with laser • Storage barrels left open with funnel • Storage barrel fell over and leaked • Student wearing sunglasses in class

  3. Questions: List 3 unsafe activities shown in the illustration and explain why each is unsafe. List 3 correct label procedures depicted in the illustration. What should Bob do after the accident? What should Sue have done to avoid an accident? Compare Luke and Duke's lab techniques. Who is following the rules? What are three things shown in the lab that should not be there? Compare Joe and Carl's lab techniques. Who is doing it the correct way? What will happen to Ray and Tim when the teacher catches them? List three items in the illustration that are there for the safety of the students in the lab. What is Betty doing wrong?

  4. SCIENCE SAFETY RULES • Safety in the science classroom is the #1 priority for students, teachers, and parents. • A list of rules must be followed at all times to ensure safety. • Both you and a parent or guardian must sign the safety contract before you can participate in the laboratory.

  5. General Guidelines • Follow all instructions carefully. If you are unsure ask me! • If you see any equipment, chemicals, etc. do NOT touch it. You do not know what it is and what it can do. • No food, drinks, gum allowed in the lab • NEVER do anything in the laboratory that does not follow the proper procedures.

  6. Guidelines Cont……. • Goggles MUST be worn at all times chemicals, heat, or glassware are used and during dissections. • NEVER horseplay in the laboratory • Clean up your area when you are finished • Dispose of all chemical wastes appropriately • Keep hands away from face, eyes, mouth and body while using chemicals or preserved specimens

  7. Check for understanding • When do you wear goggles in the laboratory? • When working with water and salt • When working with heat, chemicals, glassware and during dissections • Only when working with chemicals • Anytime you are in the laboratory

  8. Guidelines cont…. • Know the locations and operating procedures of all safety equipment including the first aid kit, eyewash station, safety shower, fire extinguisher, and fire blanket. • Students are never permitted in the storage room • During a fire drill make sure all containers are closed, gas valves turned off, fume hoods are off, and any electrical equipment turned off.

  9. Guidelines cont…. • Handle all living organisms in a humane way • When using knives and other sharp instruments, always carry with tips, and points pointing down and away from your body. • Always cut AWAY from your body.

  10. Check for Understanding • If there is a fire drill what 4 things must be done with lab equipment during an experiment? containers are closed, gas valves turned off, fume hoods are off, and any electrical equipment turned off. • You should always cut which way from your body when using a knife? • AWAY

  11. Clothing • Contact lenses should NOT be worn in the laboratory unless you have permission from your parents • No flip-flops or opened toed shoes while doing a lab • All long hair must be pulled back while working in the lab. Dangling jewelry and loose or baggy clothing are a hazard in the lab, so it must be secured

  12. Accidents and Injuries • Report any accident (spill, breakage, etc.) or injury (cut, burn, etc.) to me IMMEDIATELY! • If a chemical should splash in your eye(s) or on your skin, immediately flush with running water from the eyewash station or safety shower for at least 20 minutes. • When mercury thermometers are broken, mercury must not be touched! Notify me immediately!!!!

  13. Handling Chemicals • All chemicals must be considered dangerous! • Check the label on chemical bottles twice before removing any of the contents. • NEVER return unused chemicals to their original containers • Never taste or smell any chemicals • Hold containers away from your body • Handle acids with extreme care • Never REMOVE chemicals or other materials from the classroom and don’t flush them down the drain

  14. What is wrong?

  15. Answers • Girl with hair in flame…not tied back • Boy drinking chemicals…do not drink chemicals • Boy using microscope at window…microscopes on table • Boy hitting another on head with book…no horse play • Spilled chemicals…notify teacher immediately • Boy drinking poison… do not drink chemicals • Girl dissecting with no goggles or lab apron • Boy putting thermometer (glass tube) into a stopped with his hand • Boy holding hot glass with his hand…treat all glass as though it is hot • Boy using kitchen tool to suck up chemicals…use proper lab equipment

  16. Handling Glassware and Equipment • Carry glass tubing in a vertical position to minimize the likelihood of breakage and injury. • NEVER handle broken glass with your hands! • When removing an electrical plug from its socket, grasp the plug, not the electrical cord. • Examine glassware before each use

  17. Glassware cont…. • Report damaged electrical equipment immediately. • Be careful how you plug in electrical equipment—it does not all plug in the same. • If your hands are wet, you could get shocked! • Glass near hot flames should be treated as hot glass. • NEVER discard broken glassware in the garbage can. It needs to be put in a “sharps box”

  18. Heating Substances • Hot and cold glass has the same visual appearance, so be careful. • Exercise extreme caution when using a gas burner and make sure hair and clothing is secure. • Never leave a lit burner unattended • Never look into a container that is being heated

  19. Handling Organisms • Always wear the proper equipment when handling organisms (goggles, aprons, gloves, etc.) • When conducting any disposal procedures, be sure to provide personal protection for yourself and others around you

  20. True/False • Always read through the procedure of an experiment before starting to work. True • It is ok to perform unauthorized experiments. False • All waste chemicals should be flushed down the drain. False If you get chemicals on your skin or in your eyes, you must flush the area for 20 minutes at the eyewash station/shower. True
