  1. Case Study: the use of Synchro in schedule driven movement simulation for high precision projects

  2. Introduction • Project requirements • Project development phases • Project issues and solutions • Conclusions

  3. PrimaFrance Systems was created in 1997, as a distributor ofmarketing support tools for project management and planning • In 2007 changed the business focus to process consulting creating a separate division PrimaConsulting • Prima Group provides services based on restructurization of the companies, both creating the strategy and making sure it turns into reality • The work bases on application of dedicated tools and processes offering: • Analysis, optimization and creation of processes • Integration of tools automatizing the work into the workflow (assuring right tool for the right job) • Providing assesments and increaing competencies and capabilities of the personnel

  4. Problems that were expected to be solved • Checking the operability within the red zone of the nuclear facility • Searching for clashes, irrespectively of their source • Finding and excluding illogical/unfeasible sequences of operations • Sequence optimization • Quick visualization of changes in the red zone coming both from changes in planning and in modelization • Quantification of requested time to perform a sequence while taking into consideration dimensional constraints • Monitoring the load of components

  5. Need for a tool enabling 3D designand viewing, with strong scheduling engine and possibility of running movement simulations

  6. Schedule validation and primary path design • Issues • Inconsistent naming of activities • Resources assigned to source schedule did not indicate clearly the movement • Incorrect links • Discrepancies between validated predesign and the final schedule • Solutions • Additional meetings were conducted to extract necessary information • Activities were investigated and renamed • Codification indicating the movement was applied • In the primary design phase directions of the specific paths were designed and objects to be moved were listed and sent for validation • Links were recreated • Discrepancies were corrected as they appeared

  7. Schedule validation and primary path design • Example of primary schedule – based path design

  8. 3D model validation and path design in CAD tool • Issues • Different scales • Different standards used • Conversion errors • Solutions • Source of unit discrepancy was determined and fixed • Objects were thoroughly examined • Methodology for processing incoming 3D objects was developed

  9. 3D model validation and path design in CAD tool • Methodology towards incoming objects

  10. Issues • Manipulation difficulties • Insufficient accuracy • Lack of clearly indicated reference point • Lack of appropriate path filters • Solutions • Paths were predesigned in CAD Tool, then imported in Synchro • Refinment work • Enhancement development was requested and delivered • Extensive path analysis based on our scheduling expertise Path redesign and calibration in synchro

  11. Path redesign and calibration in synchro • Screenshot showing the calibration process

  12. Issues • Adding project schedule to the animation • Size and resolution of the output file • Quality of clash reports • Solutions • Additional meetings were conducted to extract necessary information • Movie postprocessing • Enhancement development was requested and delivered Movement simulation, clash detection, preparation of animation

  13. Project proved validity of the tool in terms of needs listed in project requirements. • Synchro detected clashes deriving from the schedule designers were not aware of showing potential errors in the schedule. • Synchro allowed to detect potential problem in the consistency of the 3D models suggesting internal quality management issues • Proved to be useful for improving the planning process in areas of assembly, maintenance and construction • Thanks to animation view it enabled delivery of more realistic schedules • Stressed the burning need of schedulling expertise in connection to constrection/assembly/maintenance design. • BIM software is not the easiest to implement, but the initial effort pays off quickly
