  3. GTL: Inside and Outside Academic and research facility: 50,000 sqf It includes regular and video classrooms, laboratories, computer rooms, the GTL-CNRS (UMI#2958) research laboratory, a library, and a student lounge. New Student dorms (individual room+shower) within walking distance, across the lake and the golf course…

  4. Metz, capital of Lorraine

  5. METZ ATLANTA Georgia Tech Lorraine European Campus Industry Industry Academia Academia Funding agencies Funding agencies MISSION: Innovative collaborations in research, education, and economic development with European partners EU USA Established in 1990

  6. Student Status at GTL • Considered as a “regular” Georgia Tech Student • Admission and graduation requirements set by the Georgia Institute of Technology (same GRE, TOEFL, GPA, etc… as for any other applicants). • Considered as a “French” Student • Eligible forlow-cost housing with the APL (French National Housing Subsidy). Married housing also available; • Access tolow cost food services and other services; • Affordable and mandatorymedical coverage in France (mandatory if under 28 years old).

  7. Graduate Programs • Same admission and degree requirements as for the Atlanta campus: • The degree (MS or PhD) is from Georgia Tech (not GTL) • Current programs in ME, EE, Comp E, Comp Sc. • The instruction at GTL is in English by GT faculty assigned to the Metz campus • Since 1991, over 900 MS students who were enrolled at GTL have graduated with an MS • Double degrees exist with selected partner schools • Research Laboratories (UMI GT-CNRS); opportunities for MS and PhD theses.

  8. Research in MEGT-CNRS UMI 2958 • Yves Berthelot, Professor ME • Research area: acoustic; ultrasonic characterization, sensors • Publications and awards: Over 100 publications, Gold medal of American Society of Mechanical engineering, Lindsay award of the acoustical Society American, NSF Presidential Young Investigator award, Fellow ASA, President of GT-Lorrraine • Mohammed Cherkaoui, Professor ME • Research Areas: Multiscale transition method, Micro and Nano Mechanics • Publications and awards: Over 100 Publications, Bronze Medal CNRS medal in 2001, French Academic of Science Prize • Nico Declercq, Assistant Professor ME • Research Areas: Ultrasonic microscopy, Acousto-optics, NDE • Publications and awards: over 80 Publications, International Dennis Gabor award from the NOVOFER Foundation

  9. Research in MEGT-CNRS UMI 2958 Ex: Interdisciplinary research in Functional Materials • Multiscale Modeling • Level 1: Local dislocations • Level 2: Elastic deformation of the structures • Level 3: System • Optical Integration through the manipulation of the size, shape, type, period of the nanostructures • Modeling and simulation of novel functionality

  10. Research in MEGT-CNRS UMI 2958 • Novel techniques and tools for Ultrasonic Imaging: • - High resolution by C-scans and Polar scans of complex materials • Nonlinear effects for early detection of damage • Air-coupled, robust, ultrasonic transducers using piezoactive polymer foams

  11. A Unique Opportunity: The Double Degree For Global Engineers Students with a BS from a US university or equivalent can obtain both the MSME from Georgia Tech and a Master degree from ENSAM-SUPELEC*, in 3 to 4 semesters only! *ENSAM is the École Nationale Supérieure d’Arts et Métiers. It is the largest French Grande École in all areas of mechanical engineering.SUPELEC is theÉcole Nationale Supérieure d’Electricité. Both are among the very best Engineering Schools in France. (see next slides)
