  4. Extempore English Speaking What does extempore mean? • With little or no preparation or forethought. • Without prior preparation. • Extempore speaking is the term used for a non formally prepared speech.

  5. Giving an Extempore Lecture or Talk Structuring your speech with ‘3Ts’ (a) ‘T’ elling the audience what you are going to tell them(b) ‘T’ elling them (what you want to tell them)(c) ‘T’ elling them what you told them

  6. An outline of an extempore talk: Sticking 4 points • Preamble: Formal salutations and greetings • Introduction:Topic • Issue:Speaker’s motive…Supportive points… • Conclusion:…Recommendations and limitations…

  7. Giving an Extempore Lecture or Talk Structuring your speech Sticking to ‘4 Points’ • One of the biggest mistakes speakers make is trying to say too much. A speech is a golden opportunity, so you want to say all you can. • The problem is, the more points you make, the less likely the audience is to remember what you say.

  8. Structuring speech • It’s much better to limit yourself to four points and hammer them home. • Ideally, the first two or three points should add up to your last point.

  9. Tips for giving a good extempore speech Prepare ahead of time by reading a lot about current events. Stick to the topic. The more you keep to the actual topic the more impressive you will be. Mind Mapping : For an extemporaneous speech it's best not to write the whole speech out.

  10. Immediately identify your strongest emotional response to the topic & try to build on that. • Ask yourself how the topic directly affects you, then those around you, then the world as a whole. • The emotion will help set the tone.

  11. Tips for giving a good extempore speech • Treat it like an essay. • Have an opening paragraph. • Try to have something pithy as your first line to get the attention of audience. • Conclude by summarizing the topic . • If you can, coming up with something punchy to finish off with. • Practice a lot.

  12. List 1.Introduce yourself. 2. Describe your hometown. What is special about it? 3. Compare your hometown with another town. 4. Describe your country’s education system. What is your attitude toward this system? Do you think it’s effective?

  13. 5. Describe the organization you work for. Where is it? What does it do? What is your job function? 6. Describe the process of taking a job in your country. 7. Compare the role of men and women in your country. 8. What is Brain drain? What are the causes and effects of it?

  14. List 9. Describe a traditional instrument in your country. 10. Describe an important festival of our country. When is it? What do people do then? 11. Describe the ethnic mix in your country. 12. Describe a traditional food of our country.

  15. List 13.Talk about mass media. Newspapers and their attractions for you. 14. Describe a traditional game. 15. Why do people play games? 16. What is your greatest wish/ one of your wishes? 17. What don’t you know about your future?

  16. 18. Describe your best holiday, party, event in your life. When was it, where and why? 19. Talk about the best present you have ever had in your life. When, why and who gave it to you? 20. In what occasions do people give presents in your country?

  17. List 21. Why always women cook and men do not in your country? Which is a better cook, a man or a woman? 22. Compare your time with your parents. What is the same and what has changed since then? 23. How has traveling changed since 100 years ago?
