5. Manual handling issues Consider: • Environment • Brakes • Bed level • Height of bed and how to adjust • Body dynamics • Team work • Follow manual handling principles (no bending, reaching, twisting, stable stance)

Patient comfort • Ensure bed does not have wrinkles • Hems of linen away from patient skin • Foot pleat to prevent pressure on toes • Plastic on mattress/ bed • Appropriate number of carers to manage patient comfort, eg. Movement, transfers • Patient safety, dignity and privacy always considered

7. Other considerations when making a bed • Carefully strip the bed as items may have caught in the bedding • Accessory items such as foot boards, fracture boards, sand bags, cradles, trapeze, donkey ropes or ladder, egg shell mattress, air mattress, sheep skins and underpads, may be needed for patient comfort and convenience. • Kylies/ drawsheets, extra pillows, even bed-rails may also be needed.

12. Mitred corners • Take corner of sheet between thumb and finger and draw around corner of the mattress. • At the same time, slip other hand under side edge of sheet and draw upward into a diagonal fold. • Lay this fold up over the mattress. • Now turn under mattress the part of the sheet that is hanging. • Drop upper fold and tuck in under mattress. • This makes a box-like (mitred) corner.
