  2. While you are waiting…. Brainstorm words that, for you, exemplify the challenges in CCGPS for ELA. On the T-Chart organizer, choose 3 or 4 of the challenges you listed that you believe are most critical for your system. List them on the left side of your chart. On the right side, briefly describe how we can help support you with this challenge.

  3. Goal 1 – Provide CCGPS Resources • ELA Reporter, CIA newsletter / webinar, ELA webinars, ELA webcasts • New ELA webcasts • Currently filming webcasts to be posted on georgiastandards.org (ELA/professional learning); • Look for the first webcasts to be posted on December 5 (high school) • Others will be posted in January (elementary / middle)

  6. Goal 2 –Offer Professional Learning • Provide online and face-to-face professional learning on specific topics such as: • Understanding the intent of the standards • Designing common core lessons • Integrating technology into the classroom

  7. Goal 2 – Offer Professional Learning • Using strategies such as close reading • Writing text dependent questions • Increasing text complexity appropriately and sequentially • Selecting and teaching academic vocabulary

  8. Goal 3 – Conduct unit review and write additional units Consider supplementing units with: • Various types of performance tasks • More attention to vocabulary instruction • Assessment resources • Resources for content literacy

  9. Goal 4 – Continue our collaboration among our partners to help coach, guide, and facilitate ELA instruction and assessment • Media specialists • RESA reading specialists • Advisory council • GACIS • School improvement department • Striving Readers

  10. Top Ten Recommendations 1. Check the GeorgiaStandards.org website for the latest resources. 2. Increase the volume of reading for students – good mix of literary and informational. 3. Include at least 50% informational texts in your instruction. 4. Learn how to ask / write good questions that are text dependent, are worthwhile for class time, and require the student to “dig deep” for the answers. 5. Use close reading appropriately. It isn’t necessary to analyze every text. Use this strategy to develop specific skills.

  11. Top Ten Recommendations 6. Thoughtfully increase the complexity of texts students read. 7. Explicitly teach foundational skills in K-2. Don’t forget that these students must learn to read. 8. Teach students to write and speak using evidence from the text. 9. Teach academic vocabulary. 10. Talk, share, collaborate, read professional books and articles!
