Protests • Mandela and his friend Tambo helped poorer black South Africans to improve their treatment and conditions. • In 1944 he joined the ANC. • Mandela hosted protests on streets together with millions of black and white South Africans. • They protested peacefully against the unjust policy of apartheid.
Achievements • Mandela shared the Nobel peace award in 1999 with F.W.de Clerc. • He got the blacks to vote, to be given a proper education and to be given proper wages. • He became South Africa's first black president. • There is a 9 foot bronze statue of him in Pretoria. • He qualified as a lawyer.
Funeral • Nelson Mandela died on the 5th of December. • He died surrounded by his family. • His body lay in state in Pretoria for two days. • Leaders from all around the world came to pay their respects on another day. • Nelson Mandela was buried among his own tribes people and it was a very private ceremony.
