  4. Social Media - the Dark Side privacy surveillance hoaxes slacktivism

  5. Social Media - the Dark Side Slacktivism – Evgeny Morozov • “the very act of joining a Facebook group is often the end – rather than the beginning – of our engagement with a cause” • “at some point one simply needs to learn how to convert awareness into action – and this is where tools like Twitter and Facebook prove much less useful.”

  6. Dealing with Slacktivism Dealing with slacktivism

  7. Social Media - the Dark Side Privacy • Facebook shares information about you on FB and on third party sites (through social plugins – the “Like” button) . . . • You are the product. The “Like” button

  8. Social Media - the Dark Side Privacy • Social media may also share info about you to the US government • Jan 10th, 2011 US court order w/ a gag order demanded Twitter turn over info about people connected to Wikileaks • Twitter challenged the gag order, told users about it. • What SNSs don't tell us about their subpoenas?

  9. Social Media - the Dark Side Surveillance – • closed, authoritarian governments routinely use social networks as tools to monitor, identify, entrap . . .

  10. Social Media - the Dark Side • Pseudonyms - protect activists and whistleblowers

  11. Social Media - the Dark Side Surveillance – • Facebook's real name only policy makes it more difficult for whistleblowers and activists to use a pseudonym to protect their identity

  12. Facebook's real name only policy “Impersonating anyone or anything is not permitted. To encourage people to use their real names on Facebook, we limit the number of times names can be changed. Also, if a Facebook representative changes your name for you, this change is considered final and you can’t manually change your name afterwards.”

  13. Social Media - the Dark Side Hoaxes – Blog – June 6th “A Gay Girl from Damascus” announced that Amina Abdallaha Araf al Omari (“Girl” blogger) had been kidnapped – possibly by Syrian authorities People mobilized to advocate for her release.

  14. Social Media - the Dark Side -Amina Abdallaha Araf al Omari (“Girl” blogger) turned out to be a pseudonym for Tom MacMaster - Both citizen and broadcast media got the story wrong -Yet, both citizen and broadcast media worked together to discover the deception

  15. Understanding #amina by Ethan Zuckerman The reporter also used a pseudonym to protect their identity, which made it difficult to verify Amina's identity, as well. “MacMaster has just made it harder for people who need to write under assumed identities to do so and have their perspectives taken seriously.”

  16. Responses to Amina hoax

  17. Journal: the challenges Summary: problems activists have using mainstream social media sites Question: 1) should Facebook allow pseudonyms? Question: 2) should social media sites be more activist-friendly? or do you think activists should seek alternative online spaces?
