  2. Instruments Balalaika • A stringed instrument with a triangular body. • There are Different types of Balalaikas. • Prima, Secunda, Alto, Tenor, Bass and Contrabass. • It has 3 strings tuned to different tunings depending on the type of balalaika. First written record was in 1688 for origin.

  3. Instruments Bayan • A type of Chromatic Accordion • Created in the early 20thcentury • Named after Mythical Russian Bard • Boyanwho may have existed in the 11th • Century court of Yaroslav the Wise.

  4. Instruments Buben • Hand Held percussion instrument • Translates to Tambourine • Virtuoso Buben players did all sorts of tricks: they could toss it up in the air and catch it, bang it on their knee, head, chin or nose

  5. Instruments Gusli • The oldest stringed Russian instrument who’s historical origin is unknown. • Folk Gusli have from eleven to thirty-six gut or metal strings • Has a diatonic Tuning: E3 A3 H3 C4 D4 E4 F4 G4 A4

  6. Instruments Gudok • Usually has 3 strings with 2 of them tuned in unison. • The come together at the bridge so that the Gudok could be played with a bow like a violin. • Has a warm rich sound • The number of strings can go up to 8 strings!

General Sound • The Bayan and the Balalaika are the main sounds in many Traditional Russian songs. • Composers use a choir for many of the chorus’s for the songs. • The vocals have classical influences. • Romani or Gypsy music has had a large influence on Russia. It can be heard through songs like Katyusha.

  9. Russian Song interpretationKatyusha Its war time and the Army is fighting to protect their people, their women. Women like “ Katyusha” also support the army as well. Katyusha is also the name of a rocket launcher used by the Red Army  in World War 2.
