In the time it takes both Canon rollers to wear out, users of the S1500 will be replacing their second assembly pad. Plus, Canon’s roller replacement kit costs $52, while Fujitsu’s rollers are purchased individually: $20 for the assembly pad and $35 for the roller. That means Fujitsu users will spend $23 more than Canon users every 100,000 scans. Easier Consumable Replacement Procedures The BLI lab test for the Canon imageFORMULA DR-C125 states that, “the procedure for replacing the feed roller is better than with some other units tested due to its clearly marked blue access cover [...] users open the front cover and the blue access cover, slide the roller to the right of the device and remove it” and…“the retard roller is just as easy to replace as the feed roller and is housed underneath a similar blue cover.” Whereas the report for the S1500 says, “the procedure for replacing the pick roller is more cumbersome than that for other workgroup units tested. Once the access cover is opened, users slide the side guides toward the middle of the scanner and squeeze the tabs on either side of the roller cover with both hands to remove. Once the roller cover is removed, users have to lift the copper coupling tab up, grab the roller shaft and remove the whole assembly.”

For example, say an office needed to scan 200 pages—the maximum daily scan volume of the S1500— in one sitting. The imageFORMULA DR-C125’s 30-page ADF would scan all 200 pages in roughly 8 minutes*, while the S1500’s 50-page ADF would take 10 minutes*. This may not seem like much of an advantage until you factor in the extra 1,300 pages users can scan with the Canon unit in a single day thanks to its 1,500 recommended daily scan volume.

Workgroup scanners like the S1500 output scanned documents onto the desktop. Plus, according to the S1500 specs, those dimensions don’t take “external attachments,” like the ADF and output trays, into account. With the imageFORMULA DR-C125’s U-turn paper path, all scanned documents are housed in the exit tray, significantly reducing the required scan space and the potential mess left after scanning several documents at once onto a user’s desktop.

Users can also automatically redact sensitive information via the solution’s Advanced Search tool—a feature not available in the ScanSnap driver, or the unit’s bundled software.

So while it is true that the S1500’s efficiency rate was about 108% while the imageFORMULA DR-C125’s efficiency rate was about 103%, this only means that the S1500 was able to exceed its rated 20-ppm speed by 8%, which still comes nowhere near the tested speed of the Canon scanner. The Canon still outperforms the Fujitsu scanner.

This works out to be an average difference of about .26 seconds per page between the imageFORMULA DR-C125 and the ScanSnap S1500—a miniscule advantage for the S1500. But given Canon’s higher suggested daily scan volume, the imageFORMULA DR-C125 will still outperform the S1500.

BizCard, Nuance eCopy PDF Pro Office, PaperPort and OmniPage, the ScanSnap S1500 offers ScanSnap Manager, ABBYY FineReader for ScanSnap 4.0, CardMinder and ScanSnapOrganizer. ScanSnap Manager is similar to Canon’s CaptureOnTouch in that it drives most of the everyday scan functions. ScanSnap Organizer is a light version of Nuance PaperPort, without nearly as many features. CardMinder and BizCard rival one another—as do ABBYY FineReader for ScanSnap and Nuance OmniPage SE. But nothing in the ScanSnap’s arsenal matches eCopy PDF Pro Office, a PDF creation tool that gives users control over the look and feel of PDFs. Given the overall more robust nature of Canon’s software bundle, the extra clicks it takes to install it all is certainly justifiable.
