  9. Angiotensin II Receptor Blockers • Reduces blood pressure. • Used mainly for hypertension and congestive heart failure. • Block angiotensin II receptors from being activated.

  12. What are Counterfeit Drugs? • A counterfeit drug is a drug which is deliberately and fraudulently mislabeled with respect to identity and/or source. • Counterfeit drugs applies to both branded and generic products

Facts about Counterfeit Drugs • An estimated 1-2 percent of drugs in North America are fraudulent • According to the Food and Drug Administration, the number of fraudulent prescription drugs intercepted by customs officials nearly doubled between 2004 and 2005 • Worldwide drug counterfeiting will be a $75 billion industry by 2010 • The composition of fraudulent drugs ranges from crude mixtures of glue, chalk and sugar to nearly exact chemical replicas of complex pharmaceuticals

Facts about Counterfeit Drugs • Counterfeit drugs are commonly manufactured in countries like China and India • Many counterfeit drugs are bought via legitimate-looking websites • It’s possible for even drugs purchased at reputable pharmacies to be counterfeit • Changes in packaging, labeling, color, taste, pill shape, and unanticipated side effects are telltale signs of counterfeiting

What is the FDA doing? • FDA has increased its efforts to halt drug counterfeiting and issued a report highlighting critical elements it hopes will help keep the U.S. drug supply safe and secure. Based on the work of the FDA's Counterfeit Drug Task Force, the report is part of an initiative to include manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers, pharmacists, consumer groups, and other stakeholders in the fight against counterfeiters.
