Early Life & Education • Thomas Jefferson was born April 13, 1743. • He was the third of ten children in his family. • Jefferson started school in 1752. • Thomas Jefferson attended the College of William and Mary when he was 16. • Father, Peter, died when he was 14 • Close sister, Jane, died at 25 (when he was 22)
Declaration of Independence • In 1776, Thomas Jefferson was comissioned to write the Declaration. • Document states the colonists rights and independence from England • Original Declaration is displayed in Washington, DC • 56 delegates signed • The Declaration of Independence is influenced by the ideas of John Locke.
