  2. Common Childhood Illnesses • Allergies • Asthma • Diabetes • Epilepsy

  3. Allergies • Your body’s response to substances that are usually not harmful • Examples: dust, pollen, pet dander

  4. Allergies • Warning signs: swelling of the throat, sneezing, a rash, vomiting, and watery eyes • To help: take medication, saline nasal flush, steam inhalation, and eat local honey

  5. Foods high in Omega 3s are also good for allergies! Cold-water Fish Flaxseed Oil Walnuts

  6. & Grass-fed meat and eggs!!!

  7. Asthma • A disorder that causes the lungs to swell and narrow • Makes breathing difficult • Makes it difficult to be active

  8. Asthma feels like breathing through a straw with your nose pinched!

  9. Asthma • Warning signs: wheezing, coughing, tightness in chest

  10. If you have an asthma attack: 1. Stop activity 2. Stay calm 3. Take medication if available, if not, then try taking short, shallow breaths. Hot herbal tea can help you relax.

  11. Natural ways to fight against asthma: • Eat more fruits and vegetables • Eat more foods with Omega 3 acids • Lose weight

  12. Diabetes • Diabetes affects the way the body gets energy. • Glucose (sugar used as fuel for your body) is not able to get to your cells.

  13. Insulin helps get glucose to cells, but with diabetes you either can not produce it (Type I) or it does not work properly (Type II).

  14. Diabetes • Warning signs: thirst, frequent urination, nausea, hunger, and fatigue (tiredness) • To help: monitor blood sugar levels, eat the proper amount of carbohydrates, balance food intake with exercise

  15. If you do not have access to insulin or means to monitor diabetes, natural remedies include: • Fig leaves • Cinnamon • Olive Oil • Avocado • Apples • Vitamin C

  16. Taking too much insulin, missing a meal, or too much exercise is bad for diabetics.

  17. Epilepsy • Marked by seizures/convulsions • Seizures are caused by unusual electrical activity in the brain.

  18. Epilepsy • Warning signs: seizures or severe muscle spasms • To help: take medication

  19. If you do not have medication available, try: • Vitamin B1 • Vitamin E • Vitamin D • Magnesium • Omega 3 acids

  20. Some doctors also suggest getting enough rest, eating regularly, and avoiding alcohol and caffeine.

  21. If you experience someone having a seizure and there is no adult to help: • Remain calm. • Place the person on the softest surface around. • Place something soft under their head, and place them on their side. • Do not try to restrain the person. • Stay with the person until they wake up.

  22. All of these illnesses can be very serious and life-threatening.

  23. Always tell an adult if an emergency situations occurs as soon as possible!

  28. Special care should be taken when handling food and water to prevent spreading germs that make you sick!

  29. Certain animals are known for carrying very dangerous germs: • Mosquitos • Ticks • Wild animals

  30. Always tell an adult if something bites you! It may be harmless, but they should know just in case you have a reaction.
