  2. Early Years • Roald Dahl was born in Llandaff Wales in 1961 • His parents were Sofie and Harald • When he was young he absolutely loved to read!

  3. Inspiration • Dahl lovedhis parents and based a lot of his characters on his family and friends • Mr. Dahl was inspired by his parents, a diary writer (dad) and storyteller (mom).

  4. School • From ages 7-9, Roald Dahl went to Llandaff Cathedral School • After school Dahl always stopped by the sweet shop • His favorite candies were Sherbert Suckers • Dahl went to boarding school at St. Peter’s Prep from 1925-1929 • His Latin Master Captain Hardcastle was the model for Miss Trunchball in Matilda

After School • At 18 Dahl joined the Public Schools Societies expedition to Newfoundland • When Dahl finished school he started to work as a salesman for Dares Salaam • When he was 23 he joined the war as a pilot officer for the Royal Air Force in Nairobi, Kenya • He wrote about his journeys in his auto-biography Going Solo

  7. Love and Children • Roald Dahl was married twice • Once to Patricia Neal in 1953 • They had 5 children • Olivia (who died at 7) • Theo • Tessa • Ophelia • And Lucy

  8. 2nd Marriage • Roald’s second wife was Felicity Crosland • They got married in 1983 • They had no children

When He Started Writing • Dahl’s first kids book was The Gremlins in 1943 • It was a picture book • Dahl’s real (children's) career didn’t start until the 60’s after he had become a father • Dahl quotes “If I had not had children of my own, I would not have been encouraged to write any children's books”

  10. Ernest Hemingway • During Dahl’s first 15 years as a writer he only wrote for adults • He also took advice from author Ernest Hemingway (right) ”Never use a colon or a semi-colon” also “When it starts going well, quit”. • Both refused to write unless they had a really good idea

  11. Some More Stories • Dahl’s first “story” A Piece of Cake was published in the SaturdayEvening Postin 1941 • Dahl wrote 16 more articles for the Post • The more Dahl wrote, the more fictional his stories became • All the Post stories were published in Over To You

  12. Some More Stuff On Dahl • Dahl had articles published in magazines including the New Yorker and Atlantic Monthly • He also wrote 2 adult novels, My Uncle Oswald and Some time Never • Dahl also won an Edger Award for Most Mysterious Author 3 times

  17. Death  In 1990 Roald Dahl was diagnosed with rare blood disorder known as: Myelodysplastic anaemia On November 23rd 1990 Roald Dahl died. He was 74 He was working until the end putting the finishing touches on The Vicar of Nibbleswicke, My Year, and The Roald Dahl Cook Book.
