  2. What qualifies as extreme? • Average IQ is 100 • 68% of people have IQs of 85-115; 95% between 70 and 130 • 5% have IQs that are at the extremes - lower than 70 or higher than 130

Intellectually Disabled • The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders V (coming out this spring) is replacing the term “mental retardation” with “intellectual disability” • Definition: a condition of limited mental ability, indicated by an intelligence score of 70 or below and difficulty in adapting to the demands of life • Varies from mild to profound • Appears before the age of 21 • IQ alone is NOT enough to be diagnosed as intellectually disabled • Met by 1% of the population

Causes • Wide variety of genetic, environmental, social, and nutritional causes • Physical causes: 25% of cases have to do with genetic or biological disorders • Down Syndrome (Trisomy 21) • Phenylketonuria (PKU) • Liver fails to produce an enzyme necessary for early brain development • Early identification and a special diet can prevent the development of mental retardation

  5. Giftedness • Definition: Superior IQ combined with demonstrated or potential ability in such areas as academic aptitude, creativity, and leadership • Causes? Unknown • Common view that gifted individuals have poor social skills and are emotionally maladjusted is false • Self-fulfilling prophecy: if you label someone as gifted or unintelligent they often become it
