  2. Repasamos… • Hablar • Correr • Vivir • We already know how to conjugate in the present tense. Follow these steps: • Find the infinitive. • Drop the -AR, -ER, or -IR to leave us with the stem of the verb. • Add the present tense ending that matches the subject and kind of verb. • Habl- • Corr- • Viv-

Follow these steps: • Find the infinitive. • Drop the -AR, -ER, or -IR to leave us with the stem of the verb. • Add the past tense ending that matches the subject and kind of verb. Remember: -ER and –IR verbs have the same past tense endings! • Habl- • Corr- • Viv-

  4. Repasamos… • In addition to what we are going to learn today, we have already learned 2 irregular past tense verbs. • Because these are “irregular” this means they do NOT follow the normal pattern or steps of conjugation. They also do not have accent marks. Ser / ir Hacer

  5. Repasamos… • We also have learned about –CAR –GAR –ZAR verbs in the past tense. They have a spelling change only for the “yo” conjugation. -CAR -GAR –ZAR C => QU G => GU Z => C SacarPagarEmpezar YosacquéYopaguéYoempecé

  6. Irregular preterit stems • Anduv- • Tuv- • Vin- • Today we are going to learn a few more irregular past tense verbs. They include: • Andar – to walk • Tener– to have • Venir – to come • These verbs have irregular stemsand endings in the preterit. • But we do NOT call them stem-changing verbs because they do not follow the same pattern as stem-changing verbs.

  7. The irregular past tense verbs from the previous slide have the following conjugations: • Notice how they do NOT have accent marks! Irregular past tense verbs do NOT have accent marks! Ayer vinieron mis abuelos a almorzar. Nosotros anduvimos por la plaza. Mi abuela tuvo helado después del almuerzo, mi abuelo tuvo un café, y yo tuve un pastel de la pastelería.

  8. There are two more irregular past tense verbs we learn in this chapter. • Dar is nicknamed a past tense “cross-dressing” verb because it is an –AR verb but has –ER/-IR endings.
