  8. Max is odd. He finds it hard to fit in with the rest of the class and his teachers find his behaviour difficult to manage. He won't take turns and laughs if another child gets hurt at playtime. He seldom finishes his work and gets very upset when the focus shifts from his favourite subject, maths, to another lesson. He talks obsessively about space exploration and is especially fascinated by black holes. Max's progress in school is unbalanced. His written work is sloppy, and his handwriting immature. He loves mathematics, though, and is always top of the class, never letting the other children forget it. Russell is not at school as often as he should be. He spends a lot of time at home looking after his mother, who is agoraphobic. When he does make it to school, he seems lethargic, anxious and preoccupied. Despite the cares on his young shoulders, Russell did well in the recent mock SATs, showing progress nearly two National Curriculum levels above the expected ones in most subjects. Things have been going a bit better for Russell recently, since his family has been assigned a home-school-community link worker and his mother is less depressed now. Tasneem is a gentle, quiet girl from a Pakistani family. She is shy, non-competitive, easy to overlook. She picked up spoken English within three months of her family's arrival in England. Although she is well-behaved and eager to co-operate, her teachers notice that she often seems to have little idea of what is happening in class. Her schoolwork is increasingly off-task. Recently she has been whispering a lot with classmates at the back of the room, especially when looking at something on the interactive whiteboard. Unexpectedly, the Urdu-speaking mother of her best friend tells the school librarian how lively and talkative Tasneem is when playing with friends in her home language, always making up songs and stories, and initiating elaborate imaginative games. Lesley started off as the brightest student in the year group, but is now seriously underperforming. Lesley is now more interested in appearance, street culture, and the newest electronic gadget, and shrugs off teachers' attempts to rekindle interest in school subjects with a sarcastic remark.
