  3. Cancer of the EyeOverview • Cancer that starts in the eye is called intraocular cancers • Several types of eye cancer • Melanoma is the most common cancer in the eye • Most eye cancer develops in the uvea • Lymphoma is the second most common form of eye cancer

  4. Causes and Risk Factors of Eye Cancer • Sun exposure • Certain occupations • Welders • Farmers • Fishermen • Chemical workers • Laundry Workers • Secondary causes • Scientists are currently researching DNA to understand the causes • Age, ethnicity and eye color

  5. Types of Eye Cancer • Melanoma • Lymphoma • Retinoblastoma

  6. Melanoma • Develops most commonly in the uvea • Iris • Choroid • Ciliary Body • Choroidal Melanoma can cause • astigmatism • Far-sighted vision • Flashing lights and floaters • Two different types of cells • Epithelialioid • Spindle

  7. Lymphoma • Begins in lymph nodes • Two types • Hogkins • Non-Hodgkins • Primary intraocular is always non-Hodgkins • People with lower immune system issues are at greater risk

Retinoblastoma • Most common eye cancer in children • Life threatening cancer of the retina • Typically discovered in babies 6-24 months • Causes are unknown • Affects 250 to 300 children in the U.S. each year • Develops in 1 affected cell and grows • Vitamin D may prevent the spread of cancer cells

  9. Diagnosis • Routine eye exam • Ophthalmoscope • Slit lamp • Ultrasound • Fluorescein Angiography • Fine needle biopsy • Test for metastases

  10. Treatment • Based on location and size • Surgery • Radiation • Laser • Chemotherapy • Monoclonal antibodies (lymphoma)

  11. American Cancer Society 2010 estimates • 2,480 new cases (primarily melanoma) • Predicted to affect men and women equally • 230 deaths (120 men and 110 women)
