  3. Operational Deployments • OPERATION ACTIVE ENDEAVOUR (OAE) • UNIFIL • EUNAVFOR ATALANTA

  4. Additional Operational Commitment • Standing NATO Maritime Groups (SNMGs) • German Task Group (TG 501.01 or „EAV“)

  5. Communalities and Characteristics • Long Duration • Long Transit Times • Climatic Conditions • Excessive Wear & Tear • Days At Sea & Absence From Home Base

  6. Communalities and Characteristics • Operational Capability vs. Operational Requirement • Warfare Areas vs. Operational Requirement • Unidirectional Operational Reality • Asymmetric Threats • Increasing Demand For Special Ops • Maritime Ops Interlocked with Ops Ashore

  7. Implications • The allocation of specialised tasks to a certain type of plattform across its entire service life is no longer feasible. • Specialisation in Warfare Areas does not meet the requirements of modern day conflicts and current operations. • The missmatch between duration of operations and transit-times needs to be resolved.

  8. Implications: Action Items • To develop the ability to re-adjust future platforms to changing operational requirements • by incorporating either sufficient reserves in the structural design or inplementation of modular sub-systems. • Additionally: increase operational availability by extending period of use in area of operation.

  9. Current Projects: Frigate Class 125 • Tasks: • Stabilization Operations • Tactical Fire Support to Operations Ashore • Counter Asymmetric Threats At Sea • Support of Special Operations

  10. Current Projects: Frigate Class 125 • New Approaches: • Intensive Utilisation - 24 Months On Deployment • Multi Crew Concept - 4 Ships, 8 Crews • Crew Change During Deployments

  11. Current Projects: Multi Role Combat Ship Class 180 • New Approaches: • Intensive Utilisation • Multi Crew Concept • Mission Modularity • Compliance with Budgetary Restraints

  12. Way Ahead: Joint Support Ship (JSS) • Tasks: • Transport of Personnel & Equipment • Military Evacuation Ops • Enabler for HRO & MIO • Support of Joint Ops • Command & Control
