  1. What does every preschool teacher need to know? Teaching is hard but teaching preschool is real hard. Many people have a calling to work in education, but it takes a special kind of educator to work with young children in their first five years of life. These teachers are tasked with supporting basic cognitive, behavioral, social and physical developmental milestones. Patience, creativity, a love for the field and a bachelor’s degree in child development are important elements of being an effective early childhood educator. We’ve assembled a survival guide of preschool teacher tips that are sure to help ease the transition from student to teacher and make your first preschool teaching experience a successful one. 1. Teachers must be passionate with full of enthusiasm Above all else, great preschool teachers love what they do. Working with young children can be immensely rewarding and fun, but also unpredictable and even stressful at times. Passion for helping kids achieve important milestones, and celebrating each new accomplishment with them, is what keeps teachers motivated no matter what each day brings. This enthusiasm should reach beyond playground fun and focus on helping young children meet developmental milestones. 2. Teachers must be patient enough with sense of humor Young children are full of energy and curiosity. Early childhood educators should bring a great deal of patience and a dose of humor to the classroom to keep children engaged in the day’s lessons. A great preschool teacher maintains a positive disposition while repeating directions, cleaning up messes and resolving the occasional conflict between peers. 3. Creativity and flexibility are go-to-skills According to one early childhood expert, one way to assess the effectiveness of a preschool teacher is to look at the classroom art projects. They should all be different, which indicates a willingness to let each student express his or her own perspective on the subject. Early childhood educators should be able to adapt lesson plans to concepts that children can understand. Incorporating learning games and other teaching techniques can keep children engaged and focused throughout the day. Flexibility is another skill teachers must have mastered in as being flexible can help lessen stress levels and keep things on track. 4. Communication Skills amongst the teachers must be considered a key point. Communicating authentically, and letting children get to know the teacher as a “real person” builds a sense of trust that fosters a healthy learning environment. Preschool teachers must relate to children on their level, breaking subjects down into small chunks that youngsters can grasp.

  2. The teacher must also keep parents informed about their children’s progress, and maintain open dialogue with fellow teachers and administrators to make sure best practices are being followed and to stay up-to-date on the most effective teaching methods. 5. They need to be organized and consistent A well-prepared teacher selects purposeful, age-appropriate activities, and can articulate a specific learning goal for every assignment. Planning ahead also puts the teacher in a better position to be patient, flexible and creative. Consistent scheduling is also very important. Young children adapt to school more easily when there’s a predictable routine in place, such as having story time at the same time every day.
