How to Turn A Desktop PC In To A Virtual Router Imagine this –you’ve found a new Internet plan from your ISP which provides you with all the bandwidth you’ve ever dreamed of, at speeds you never imagined and you’re really eager to connect all your devices to your upgraded network – but you still only have your old router with no Wi-Fi capabilities. And before you order that rather pricy new Wi-Fi router from Amazon, you only have one question in mind – can I somehow use my old router to connect all my Wi-fi enabled devices to these oodles of bandwidth I have acquired? Turns out, yes you can. Welcome to the world of Virtual Routers, or vRouters, as they are more commonly referred to as. What is a vRouter? The official definition states that a virtual router is a software- based routing framework that allows the host machine to perform as a typical hardware router over a local area network. To put it simply, a vRouter is a piece of software that allows you to use your wired Ethernet connection as a Wi-fi connection by using your PC’s in built internet card. And in this post, we are going to explain how to use one of the best vRouters in the market today – mHotspot. mHotspot is a Windows based lightweight utility (merely 400 KB) that can turn your simple LAN connection into Wi-Fi. It allows you to choose the name (or SSID) of the network you wish to create and set a password for the connection. To begin, simply visit the mhotspot download page, at this link –mHotspot Download. You can also see the number of times the utility has been downloaded and all the awards mHotspot has won (so far!). Go ahead and download for the platform you require it for. Assuming you require it for your Windows PC, click on the “Windows” link. Go ahead and install it.

  2. Also, go to the Network and sharing center on your PC (Start-&gt;Control Panel- &gt;Network and sharing center), right click on your Ethernet connection and go to Properties. Click on Sharing tab. Now click on “Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s internet connection”. Click Ok to make the changes work. Now go to Start-&gt;mHotspot. You’ll see a fairly basic GUI asking for a Hotspot name and password. Enter both by your choice, and click on “Start Hotspot”. That’s it. Congratulations! Your Ethernet connection just got converted into Wi-fi. Go ahead and start connecting all your Wi-fi enabled devices. And through the same GUI, you can even set the maximum number of devices allowed to connect (with a cap of 10), see the details of the connected devices (including IP, MAC address and name) and even use mHotspot as a repeater for any weak Wi-fi connections you might encounter in public places like hotels or airports. Connectify, MyPublicWifi, Virtual Router Manager are some of the alternatives to mHotspot but none offer neither the lightweight nature or the ease of use which comes with mHotspot. Overall, mHotSpot is a very useful freeware for those who want to create a wireless hotspot at home or office.
