  1. A to Z Journals: a cross curricular, differentiated approach to independent study

  2. First, students are given a check list for a letter of the alphabet.

  3. The checklist includes a border, a goal , and research in different curricular areas.

  4. Next, students begin work on their border, then a goal, and finally, the curricular areas of study that are tied into the letter of the alphabet.

  5. The Border Students create a border on each page by illustrating with items in the border that begin with the letter for the week.

  6. For example, • Students may draw grapes in the border of their “g” page. • Or they may draw dice in the border of their “d” page. • Some students like to illustrate their border with different items that all start with the same letter, such as: balloons, buttons, bats, and biscuits on their “b” page.

  7. Each Student’s A to Z journal becomes a personal expression of their learning.

  8. Students Work Independently or With Partners

  9. Examples of goals are: • Save $25 dollars. • Have my A to Z journal done on time. • Do all my homework. • Keep my desk clean. • Do my chores. • Improve my handwriting. • Work on my multiplication facts.

Famous person: Benjamin Franklin Why is this person famous? 5 SENTENCES with facts 4. Topic: First Aid (Health book) what is first aid? write the steps of what to do if someone is choking and bleeding.

Math: Fractions Fred began planting a flower garden on Friday. He planted ｼ of it with Freesias. He planted 1/6 of it with Fucshias, and 2/5 of it with Forget-Me-Nots. How much of his garden did he plant? (you need to make equivalent fractions-by finding common denominators) 7. Evaluate your goal. (I met my goal this week because, or I didn’t meet my goal because�) 8. Border
