  1. Mollusks SWBAT describe the body and the forms of movement used by the octopus; describe the body of the clam; explain how the clam obtains food.

  2. Mollusks • What are the three classes of Mollusks, and what is their defining characteristic? • Gastropoda • Coiled shells • Cepholapoda • Tentacles • Bivalvia • Two part, hinged shells

  3. The Octopus • Describe the body and forms of movement used by the octopus. • Eight arms that allow it to move in any direction • No firm support – but lots of muscles • Suction disks – allow grasping • Mouth under “head”, in the center of arms • Anchors its arms to move its body • Can regenerate arms • Moves slowly • Rapid movement requires water to be forced out through a siphon, which can also release a “smoke screen” of ink • Thin, flexible body that can fit in small areas

  4. The Clam • Describe the body of a clam • Hard hinged shell to protect it • Soft body is covered by a thin skin called the mantle • The outside of the skin manufactures the material that hardens to become the shell • Muscles keep its shell closed tight • It has a muscle foot that allows it to move

  5. The Clam • How do clams eat? • They are filter feeders • Send out two siphon tubes, one draws water in and other siphons out the waste
