  1. How to Become a Security Guard in Hawaii

  2. Hawaii has had their “guard card” requirements for less than a year. Their rules went into effect in June of 2013. Even now, the requirements to become a security guard in Hawaii are fairly basic.

  3. First, you must be at least 18 years old. You must have your high school diploma, or a GED.

  4. You’ll need to be able to demonstrate that you have a clean bill of psychological health, a clean criminal record, and a good financial history. You will be required to submit fingerprints.

  5. You’ll also need 8 hours of classroom instruction with a Board-approved instructor. Each year you’ll need another 4 hours of instruction if you want to keep your license up to date.

  6. This does not mean, of course, that you can’t seek additional classroom training on your own to become a more competitive candidate.

  7. There are no statewide licensing requirements for armed guards simply because state statues prohibit the use of guns. Individual counties in Hawaii may have rules that allow for armed guards, and if that is the case they will set their own requirements. Almost all of them require armed guards to be at least 21 years old.

  8. You can fill out Hawaii’s application online, but you’ll need to print it out and mail it. There’s no way for you to submit it to any kind of system or database when you’re finished with it.

  9. Getting your license could cost anywhere from $100 to $250. It depends on how much your employer is willing to cover. The cards are portable, which means you can take them from one employer to the next.

  10. However, you can’t get your guard card initially until you have been offered a job by a security agency. This is one state where you can’t really get an edge by getting your card ahead of time. In Hawaii, you’ll simply want to start with your job search. Get started now, and say “Aloha” to your new career!
