  2. Wine regions in the United States tend to fall into a couple of different categories. There are those that are established and recognized on a global scale, and then there are others that are on the rose and very much on the radar of wine lovers the world over. One of the regions that falls into that latter category are the wineries in Lake County.

  3. Like many regions in California, Lake County has seen grapes grown since the 1800’s. This area was hot particularly hard by prohibition, though, and essentially had to start from the ground up in the 1960’s. The rate of growth and quality of wine delivered since that time has been nothing short of spectacular.

  4. Lake County is considered by many to be a region that is destined to be one of the next great wine areas in the US, which is why it’s well worth making a visit now before the crowds start arriving en masse.

  5. There is a lot of grape growing taking place in the region, with roughly 8,400 acres of grapes being grown at this very moment. The wines that are most prominent here are Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc, but as the region grows, so do the number of different wines on offer.

  6. The grapes grown here are of a higher quality for a variety of different reasons that go beyond the climate and soil that make most regions great. The vast majority of vineyard are planted at a height in excess of 1,500 feet, which means they are less prone to mildew and attacks from pests.

  7. As such, the need for pesticides is greatly reduced, making for grapes that are quite simply perfect for making wine. This is something that you will most certainly recognize when you start taking part in some Lake County wine tasting.

  8. To make things a little easier for those planning on making a visit to the Lake County wineries in the region, the area is split into 5 different mini-tours that make the distance you have to travel a whole lot less than it would be if you just drove in without a plan in place.

  9. This doesn’t mean that you need to follow these tours to the letter, but it certainly makes things a little bit easier when trying to plan a trip that helps you get the most out of your available time.

  10. Lake County is in close proximity to a number of major Californian cities, so you can make day trips out of each of these mini-tours.

  11. Staying in the area means having access to all sorts of fantastic accommodation options, with everything from coy bed and breakfast spots to casino resorts all open to guests.

  12. There is a lot so see and do in the Lake County region, which is why making a weekend of it is such a great idea. What you will find, besides the stunning scenery, are a ton of great wineries and food destinations that will make you glad you came.
