  1. What Should You Look for When Choosing A Baby Crib Mattress

  2. When people are expecting a baby, they usually are in search of the best cribs for the new addition to the family. What is of prime importance when choosing these baby cribs is that safety should be the primary feature. Cheap baby cribswhich are potentially unsafe or dangerous or have lead-based paints, are not to be considered at all.

  3. In addition to baby cribs, what the parents need to consider are baby mattresses. The best crib mattress may not be the most soft one. In fact, a soft mattress will surely be more comfortable as per the adults but it could be a hazard and could even be deadly for the infant. The crib mattresses should be as firm as possible.

  4. This will protect your infant during their naps in the day as well as the night. A soft mattress is not required for the baby. The reason is that adults require support for the joints and therefore prefer soft mattresses, but babies need mattresses that protect them from harm.

  5. Factors to consider when buying a mattress When buying a mattress for the baby, there are a few factors that need to be considered. They are :

  6. Safety: SIDS or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome cases are reduced when the baby is placed on a firm mattress. The reason is that there is less of a risk of suffocation. A soft, comfortable mattress, on the other hand, causes the face of the baby to sink into the mattress when he or she turns on his or her stomach and can potentially cause suffocation. A firm mattress, however, still allows him or her to get plenty of air.

  7. Fit : The mattress should fit snugly in the crib. There should be no gaps between the mattress and the slats. This will create a rigid edge and so the baby will be protected. Soft mattresses, on the other hand, allow the baby to get trapped between the crib slats and the mattress. If the mattress is too small for the crib, the baby may roll and hurt himself or herself on the slats.

  8. If the mattress is too big, it will fold on the sides of the crib and should the baby roll towards the side; there are chances of him or her suffocating as a result of being unable to breathe should the sides of the mattress fall and cover the face.

  9. Positioning: The babies when put to sleep should be put on their backs, as it will not only prevent suffocation, but it will also decrease the acid reflux in the baby. The firm mattress will help this position of the baby to be maintained. Babies will find it harder to roll to their stomach or their side when the mattress is firm and so that protects them even more.

  10. These are some of the factors to be considered when buying a mattress for the crib of the baby.
