  2. Early Life • Balboa was born in Jerez de los Caballeros, Spain. • He explored the new world with Rodrigo de Bastidas 1501. • He was inspired by Christopher Columbus that pearls could be found on the Northern coast of Venezuela.

  3. Early Life • They were able to trade European goods for the large quantity of pearls and gold. • While they sailed west, their ship began to leak. • They forced them to abandon their ship on the island of Hispaniola, Then they had their goods taken by the governor of the island.

  4. Early Life • He sailed with a group headed for a colony in what is now Colombia in 1510. • He reached the Pacific in September 1513. • He claimed it for Spain and called it the South Sea.

  5. Early Life • He arrived from in in 1514. • Balboa was guilty and beheaded in January 1519.

  6. To the Isthmus of Panama • As a living, Balboa tried to be a farmer, he never was good at it. • In 1510 Balboa decided to stow away with his dog. • Then he wanted to sail to San Sebastian on the Isthmus of Panama.

  7. To the Isthmus of Panama • In September 1513 Balboa agreed and set out with Spanish soldiers and 1,000 Native Americans. • He ventured the neighboring region of Cobia. • He was friends with a local chief. He also married his daughter.
