  2. Cooperative learning is a teaching methodology, or instructional technique, which allows students to collaborate and work together in small groups to achieve a common, educational task. What is Cooperative Learning?

Equal opportunity to succeed • Develop skills for day-to-day social interaction • Positivity, leadership, trust, conflict-management, encouragement, negotiation, team-building, speaking and listening • Enhances student achievement • Heightens goal-setting and innovational thinking • Encourages participation • Introduces a new, different method of learning • Encourages group diversity and unites different student abilities Advantages

Noise/Confusion: too many students talking or talking over each other • Group grading: group assigned one grade, despite level of individual involvement • Introverts: may not necessarily be encouraged to participate and may not willingly do so • Learning differences: some students develop and engage differently • Lack of structure or oversight: students may not be paying attention or actually working on the assigned task Disadvantages

  5. Cooperative learning is a great way of getting students involved and engaged and should definitely be applied in the classroom. By working together, students will develop the skills they need to accomplish tasks using critical elements such as time management, teamwork, problem solving and leadership. • Instructors and teachers should be cognizant of the differences in students’ ability, shy and introverted students or students that tend to be “bossy.” As such, teachers shall assign groups accordingly and oversee group participation where possible. position
