  2. ANIMAL FARM • Corruption of socialist ideals in the Soviet Union • Societal tendency toward class stratification • Danger of a naïve working class • Abuse of language as instrumental to abuse of power

  3. NAPOLEON • Corrupt opportunist • Never makes a single contribution to the Rebellion • Shows interest only in the strength of his power over Animal Farm, not the strength of the farm itself • Most directly modelled on Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin or political tyrants generally • Namesake-- French general Napoleon, who betrayed the democratic principles on which he rode to power

  4. SNOWBALL • Parallel for Leon Trotsky • Fervent ideologue • Rely only on the force of his own logic and rhetorical skill to gain influence • Has certain moral flaws • We cannot eliminate government corruption by electing principled individuals to roles of power

BOXER • Epitomises all of best qualities of the exploited working classes: dedication, loyalty, and huge capacity for labour •  Naïve trust in good intentions of the intelligentsia and inability to recognise even the most blatant forms of political corruption • Exploited by the pigs more than he had been by Mr. Jones • Represents all of the invisible labour that undergirds the political drama being carried out by the elites

SQUEALER • Abuses language to justify Napoleon’s actions and policies to the proletariat • Radically simplifies language-- limits terms of debate • Complicates language unnecessarily-- confuses and intimidates the uneducated • Employs jargon, baffling vocabulary of false statistics • Lack of conscience and unwavering loyalty to his leader •  Perfect propagandist for any tyranny

Squeal-- refers to pig’s typical form of vocalisation, also means betray  OLD MAJOR • Represents both Karl Marx, German political economist, and Vladimir Ilych Lenin, Russian revolutionary leader • Serves as source of ideals the animals continue to uphold even after the pigs betrayed them • Seems to have claimed a false brotherhood with the animals in order to garner their support for his vision.
