Chapter 7 • Chapter 7 is about two more cases: Genitive and Dative
Genitive • 7.3 The genitive case is the case of possession. • The genitive usually follows the word it is modifying. The word it is modifying is called the head noun. ui[oj tou/ qeou/ • 7.4 The key word is “of.” Thus the son of God
The Dative Case • 7.5 The Dative case is the case of the indirect object. It has a fairly wide range of usage that can be learned by context. • The key words are “to” or “for.” (remember that 2 or 4 people go on a date) • a;ggeloj kuri,ou fai, netai kat’ o;nar tw| vIwsh,f • an angel of the lord appeared to Joseph in a dream
7.9 Hints for this chart • Masc and Neut always have the same endings in genitive and dative. • In dative there is always a iota in all cases and genders. In singular it is subscripted. • Genitive plural is the same in all three genders. It sounds like “own.” The genitive is the case of “own”ership.
The Rest of Ch. 7 • 7.11 Look carefully at 7.11 and notice that the article never changes. • 7.12 Three more noun rules • Dative singular has iota subscript • Vowels change length
The Rest of Ch. 7 • In the Gen. and Dat. case, the Masc and Neut forms will be identical Twins • 7.13 Some words don’t decline (e.g., names)
