BEN Ben (40) is a sessional university lecturer who specialises in ICT and communication for development. A recent research grant took him to India where he was investigating innovative uses of technology in rural schools. Ben is particularly interested in how participatory media can be used to improve the lives of individuals and communities in the developing world. As a young man Ben spent a year volunteering in Indonesia and then travelled for six months in south-east Asia. This experience made him keenly aware of the debilitating effect of poverty on people's lives. He is married to a teacher and has two children at primary school. Ben uses Twitter everyday, has his own research-related blog and uses Flickr to post photographs of his travels.
