The IRIOS Workshop held in London on July 22, 2011, discusses the insufficient motivation among academic authors to self-archive in institutional repositories. To address this issue, we recommend that Research Councils and government funders mandate that researchers deposit copies of their articles in their institution's repository within one month of publication, or a mutually agreed timeframe. This policy is vital for improving open access and promoting better integration of research outputs across various platforms, ultimately benefiting the academic community.

Research Council Grants on Web Systems Gerry Lawson IRIOS Workshop, London 22.7.11
Academic authors currently lack sufficient motivation to self–archive in institutional repositories. We recommend that the Research Councils and other Government funders mandate their funded researchers to deposit a copy of all their articles in their institution’s repository within one month of publication or a reasonable period to be agreed following publication, as a condition of their research grant. RC GOW Issues • All receive datafeed from SSC Ltd • Some still frozen waiting update • Great variation (e.g. NERC gives financial breakdowns, ESRC gives outputs) • Councils have agreed in principle a common system • Desire to link inputs to outputs • Potential to link to impacts and datasets • Need for common export format (e.g. CERIF) • Need for authority files for people, institutions, departments, funders, output types, project types • How best to meet RO needs?
