Wearing workwear and military uniforms in the early 20th century gave durability precedence over style, giving rise to the history of functional fashion. However by combining weather-resistant materials and ergonomic designs, outdoor and sportswear brands blurred the distinction between fashion and function in the 1980s and 1990s. According to Jesse Keyes, practicality and style are combined in everything from office wear to evening wear, thanks to the widespread use of functional fashion in daily wear today.
